At that time it was part of Apache County. The town was founded on October 10, 1887 by George A. Smith and named for William Fenton Hobbs, a Ulysses S. Grant land commissioner who had been instrumental in organizing the Navajo Nation after its creation from portions of Arizona and New Mexico following their defeat in the Mexican–American War (1866-1867). In 1950, much of present day Navajo County became part of newly created Canisteo County; however, Hobbs remained within Navajo County until 1988 when it joined CanisteoCounty as one component of its new local government structure. According to the 2010 US Census figure*, there were 584 people residing in Hobbs; 96% Native American or Alaskan American with no other race recorded among them* (* Note: This estimate does not include any unknown or unreported minorities). Of these residents*, 38% were male and 62% female*. Hobbs is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Navajo Nation. The first permanent settler in what is now Hobbs was George Armstrong Custer on July 8, 1881, when he and his party of soldiers were exploring the area for an opening into Mexican territory that would be accessible by wagon road from Santa Fe. Hobbs was founded on November 5, 1887 by John A. Hobbs and others from Fort Defiance (New Mexico) after they banded together to purchase land east of present-day Hobbs from Pecos Apache Chief Manuel García de la Hoz. The town site lay atop a small mountain called "Mountain View" which had been used as a military post by General Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War. There are several theories about why Mountain View became known as "Hobbits". One suggests that because there were few trees or other plants within range of shotguns used to hunt game in those days (the well-documented practice has since ceased), residents developed their own way of getting around without being killed by game animals roaming free near their homes; this led them to name their new community after MountNotable nearby. Another theory suggests that because it was located along an old Native American trail leading southward from Albuquerque through most of what is now New Mexico Territory, hobbits grew up hearing stories about people who had made it through punishment or disaster - including such famous explorers as Kit Carson and Jesse James - and decided to settle down just west of the Colorado River so they could do likewise someday too! The Hobbs family settled in New Mexico in 1881. The first generation of Hobbses was successful ranchers and farmers, and the second generation became prominent politicians and businessmen. The family is buried at the Family Cemetery in Raton.
