The history of firearms in Hobbs, New Mexico can be traced back to at least 1892. That year, the first gunsmith in the community was opened by H.H. Brownell and his son-in-law, P.G. Lundgren. The business grew quickly and by 1912 it had been purchased by John W. Bigham Sr., who renamed it the "Bigham Arms Shop." It is likely that the shop became more specialized with time as well, specializing in everything from shotguns to rifles and handguns. In 1951, Mr. Bigham's son John Jr., took over ownership of the business and continued to run it until his death in 1979. During its years of operation, the shop produced a wide variety of firearms including revolvers, shotguns, rifles and pistols - all of which were sold under the name "Bigham Arms." One important facet of Hobbs' Firearms History is that it has been home to many famous gunsmiths including Elisha Stroud (1904-2005), George Earle (1893-1955) and Byron White (b 1924). These men were responsible for designing or manufacturing some of America's most popular firearms such as Colt's Model 1911 pistols and Winchester Model 1300 rifles; both latter models are still being manufactured today! Hobbs is a small town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rio Grande Valley region. The economy of Hobbs is based on agriculture, mining, and services. The first known inhabitants of Hobbs were the Acoma people who lived there from about 1100 to 1400 AD. From about 1650 to 1800 AD, the Pueblo de San Miguel de Allende culture occupied the area. In 1847, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered gold in what is now Hobbs and named it San Miguel de Allende after his victory over Mexican forces near that site. In 1851, Englishman John Wesley Powell explored and named nearby Canyon Creek after him. In 1863, politician George Armstrong Custer fought in the American Civil War at Fort Sumter and was killed in battle near present-day Palo Alto Village on July 8th. At his death he bequeathed land including what became Hobbs to his heirs within minutes of his death without ever leaving Texas soil; this land eventually became part of Indian Wells County outside Los Angeles proper but still touchespeeing Hobbs’s limits today because it formed part of Custer's final gift to Santa Fe County residents as well as millions given by other Civil War soldiers' families across New Mexico Territory (the same thing happened with Homestead Ranch when Taos Grant gave it to New Mexicans). Today's businesses in hobbs center around farming and ranching which have been its mainstay for centuries; however local manufacturing continues as well with several small businesses providing goods like vacuum cleaners and air compressors for example. Hobbs, New Mexico is a small town in Grant County, New Mexico. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Hobbs is located on the east side of the Animas River and about 20 miles (32 km) south of Denver. The area that now makes up Hobbs was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. By 1887, there were only six people living in what is now Hobbs. When gold was discovered in Colorado in 1859, many prospectors came to central New Mexico to search for ore and gold Rush fever quickly spread through the region. The towns of Grantsville and Wellington were founded near Goldfields National Monument as result of this frenzy for riches. In 1865, Drury Hennepin opened a hospital in what is now Hobbs to provide care for miners who had become sick after working in the mines. The community soon grew around this hospital and began to use its name – “Hobbs” – as an appellation for itself throughout much of its history. In 1896, a post office was established at Hobbits; it remained open until 1951. When Central Arizona Railway reached Gallup from Benson via Mesa Verde on November 5, 1912,[1] businessowners decided that they would like to see their town renamed after one of their own men who had played an important role along the railroad's route: John Wesley Dobson Sr., vice president and general manager from 1911-1914.[2] After much debate among business owners and citizens alike[3], on December 2nd 1912 it was decided that John Wesley Dobson Jr.'s namesake town would be named after him instead
