Hobbs was founded in 1912 by J.B. Hobbs and his wife, Lillie A. Hobbs. The original store was a one-story building on the east side of town, across from the current courthouse. In 1938, the Hobbs family donated land to build a new store on the south side of town, which is now known as the downtown square. Theoriginal store still stands today and is used as a community center. The city of Hobbs began its growth in the 1920s when it became an agricultural central point fortsuring that feeders could reach all over New Mexico without being lost in rugged country terrain. The first post office in town was established in 1922 and soon became known as the "hub" of activity for residents and businesses nearby. In 1941, J.B.'s daughter, Donna Dickey (better known as Donna Hobbs), married Harry Hargrave II who had been born in nearby Deming and raised there until he moved to New Mexico with his family in 1948 when he opened his own grocery store there

Hobbs is a small town in New Mexico, located about halfway between Albuquerque and Las Cruces. The population was 1,567 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Hobbs County. The first people to live in what is now Hobbs were the Pueblo of Acoma people who migrated from central Mexico around 1810. After trading with the Spanish, they received protection from them when they ceded their land to the United States in 1848. In 1854, John Wesley Dobson built a cabin here and started farming. In 1865, he married Anna Maria Hodge and this led to his name being given to the community by his wife's family. The first store was opened in 1915 by Jens Larson and it continued until 1934 when it closed due to lack of business interest. In 1916, George Aiken began growing corn here which became one of the town's mainstay crops until World War II caused widespread destruction throughout southern New Mexico agriculture due to bombing raids by American forces. During World War II, many men from Hobbs enlisted in the military or worked on farms while others returned home after serving their country; some even raised horses here for transportation during wartime events like Omaha Beach Memorial Day ceremonies across America (the largest horse-drawn procession ever). The post office was established at Gobles on July 15, 1911; it served as an important center for mail delivery within the small community for many years before ending operations in 1974 because of increased phone service costs elsewhere in town. In 1951–1953, residents erected a $3 million school addition that included a gymnasium and auditorium/hallway leading directly into downtown Hobbs; construction also included new streetscape features such as sidewalks and lighting along Center Street which bisected downtown then paralleled US Interstate 10 east-west since that highway crossed over Topock Creek just west of town limits on its way northwestward near Alamogordo Junction.) The building opened September 19th 1953 with attendance topping 100 students inside and out including future Governor Rick Perry who attended opening ceremonies along with other dignitaries including Presidents Dwight Eisenhower (1953), John F Kennedy (1963) and Lyndon Johnson (1969). With increasing budget constraints following America's economic recession during that period Hindman School District No 5 constructed a new elementary school south of downtown Hobbs adjacent to Topock Creek park starting instruction in fall 2009 making it one of only two public schools north of Albuquerque without any competition; plans are underway to construct another elementary school adjacent to Topock Creek park while also renovating/upgrading buildings facing Main Street near where Hawkshaw Road meets I-10) giving Hobbs status as both an urban center as well as an agricultural hub.)
