The town was founded by John Wesley Hobbs in 1881 as a trading post on the East Fork of the Santa Fe River. It quickly became an important center for small-time gunsmiths and rifle shooters, and soon adopted its present name – meaning “town at the fork” – to reflect its role as a crossroads for commerce and warfare. Hobbs played an important role in America’s revolution against Spain, serving as both a supply depot and military base. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), it was one of twelve towns along the Transcontinental Railroad that sided with Mexico City over Texas. In 1868, Hobbs became part of territorial New Mexico when it was created from parts of Arizona and California. The town continued to grow during this time, becoming an important player in local politics and economy. In 1902, Hobbs residents voted to become part of the new state of Albuquerque. At this point, bullets were already an integral part of local culture – some residents even still kept handguns in their homes! Over time, bullet adoption served as a symbol of Albuquerque’s burgeoning cityhood: people increasingly depended on firearms to defend themselves against crime and bandits alike. Today, bullet usage within Albuquerque is slightly different than it once was: many people now own rifles rather than handguns, while also retaining some traditional skills related to muzzleloading pistols. Despite this changeover – or perhaps because of it – bullets continue to play an important role in our community life here in Hobbs!

In 1984, Hobbs incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of New Mexico's most diverse and vibrant communities.
In 1881, James Hobbs settled in the towns of Acoma and Sierra de Juarez in what is now New Mexico. He was a successful cattle rancher and politician who helped to create the state. In 1907, he became the first sheriff of New Mexico. After his death, Hobbs was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Hobbs, New Mexico is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Taos County, New Mexico. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. Hobbs began as a community on what is now the east side of Pecos River, about six miles northeast of present-day Hobbs. The first store was built in 1881 by J.W. Hatton and became known as "The Hatton Store." In 1905, Dr. Cundiff Harry established an insane asylum in Hobbs for patients who had been brought to him from all over Taos County by friends and family members. In 1916, John Wesley Dobie bought land adjacent to Harry's Asylum and founded Dobie Hospital which served as one wing of the new Hobbs Community School until it closed in 1957; then it became an elementary school again before finally closing again in 1984 after more than 50 years serving its students. The post office operated at HobBS from 1881 to 1907; then it moved to Bernalillo (nowSanta Fe) until 1912 when it rejoined HobBS as a mail service with a new building designed by architect John Waddell Woolridge Jr.. From 1912 to 1914, mail was delivered twice per week by horseback from Bernalillo to old Town Hall where packages were placed into sacks and carried across the river on each trip; then they were transferred to wagons for delivery across Pecos during winter months A fire destroyed most of downtown Hobbs on January 17th, 1910 while merchants were attending a meeting regarding proposed changes that would impact their business operations including increasing prices for goods being sold at local stores etc.; however no injuries occurred as a result HobBS residents erected temporary wooden buildings that still stand today on Main Street across from City Hall; these buildings served as homes until 1941 when they were replaced by permanent brick structures that still stand today On November 6th, 1916 Gertrude Atherton married Lew Wallace in Lowrie Presbyterian Church; Lew later changed his name to John Wesley Dobie and continued farming there until his death in 1951 . Mrs Atherton died in 1984 . On October 2nd 1905 citizens voted 3–1 notto annex Nuevo León County because many believed annexation would dilute town's political power & reduce tax revenue
