The Hobsons were farmers and ranching owners who started the town on their farmstead. In 1925, Hobbs became the first mayor of Hobbs after being elected to office from what is now the city of Haskell. In 1936, Hobbs was named America's fastest growing city by Forbes magazine. The towns economy has been based largely on agriculture since it was founded. The history of Hobbs began with John Fenton's purchase of land in 1881 which he donated to the government for a school district in what is now Haskell County. When Fenton died in 1882, his widow Anna took over running the school district and renamed it "Hobbs". She also purchased some additional land which she used for her own farmstead until 1906 when she sold it all to her son-in-law Jens Christensen for $2,500 cash. After purchasing his mother's home at 11th Street and Pecos Road from her son-in-law Harry Cramer in 1916, Christensen developed what is now known as downtown Hobbs into a thriving commercial district that included several banks, grocery stores and restaurants. In 1928, Hanna (Anna) Christensen married Hugo Weismann who became one of the wealthiest men in New Mexico after owning numerous businesses throughout southern New Mexico before moving to Albuquerque where he cofounded Socorro Oil Company with fellow oilman Clarence Birdseye Jr.. Weismann served as Mayor of Albuquerque from 1945 until his death in 1978. In 1935, Mayor Hanna appointed Charles Wirtz as deputy mayor under her leadership which helped spur economic development within hobbittown during its early years while also creating opportunities for people from other parts of New Mexico to come live and work within hobbittowns limits providing many jobs for local residents during this time period The current incarnation of downtown Hobbs began developing rapidly following World War II when war production shifted away from munitions plants towards new engineering projects such as agricultural production facilities at nearby Rancho Seco Dam which led to increased population growth within hobbittown boundaries due to an increase number Of working class families moving into newly developed housing developments near downtown areas seeking more affordable housing than they could find outside their neighborhoods . This influx OF NEW MEXICO BUSINESSES TO DOWNTOWN HOBBS INCREASED THE VALUE OF HOBBSTOWN REAL ESTATE FROM $100 TO OVER $600 BY THE EARLY 1970S . Over time however another wave OF BUSINESS OWNERS vacated properties adjacent TO DOWNTOWN FOR CLOSER CONDITIONS AND NOW LIVE NEAR THE TOWN CENTER WHERE THEY OPERATE PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS . By 2000 property values had decreased back below $100 again but have slowly regained some level OF VALUE AS COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES HAVE BACKED UP AGAIN AND MORE PEOPLE ARE SEEKING OPTIONS FOR LOCAL RECOVERY THROUGH INVESTMENTS , ENTERPRISING OR JUST LOOKING FOR MORE ACCESSIBLE LOCATION
