Gallup, New Mexico is the birthplace of both the modern telescope and the first ever photograph. The town was founded in 1879 by members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as a scientific station on Rancho de la Bahia. It was renamed Gallup in 1903 in honor of astronomer James A. Gallagher, who had headship of AAAS from 1888 to 1893. The first optics laboratory in America was established at Gallup in 1878 by Drs. George Ellsworth and David Brewster under auspices of the AAAS, then known as The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This laboratory developed optical instruments used by scientists around the world and played an important role in helping to develop photography and other sciences during its early years. In 1903, after James A. Gallagher's death, his Scientific Medal was given to him "for services rendered to science." A variety of telescopes were erected at various locations throughout New Mexico during this time period including: -the Atacama Telescope located on Cerro Tololo Hill near Chavezville; -the Haleakala Telescope on Maui; -the Los Alamos National Laboratory's Northern Hemisphere Observatory; -the San Pedro Mountain Observatory; and -the University Museum’s Southwestern observatory complex which included two large Echelle Telescopes totaling 97 feet diameter and four smaller Schmidt reflectors measuring 53 feet diameter each. Calibration is an operation that involves aligning the objective lens with the reticle and adjusting the focuser so that both objects within the viewfinder are on target. calibrating aScope should be done at least once per year, and it’s especially important if you use high-power scopes such as those used in elk or deer hunting because magnification affects how close your target will be at any given time. It’s also important to make sure that all of the focusing adjustments are correct; if they are not, it can cause distortion in your image which might prevent you from seeing your target clearly. Try moving around some objects nearby and see how well they move through the scope without distortions appearing on either side of your viewfinder. Next, adjust each focuser according to how far away from your eye each object appears and try different magnification levels while maintaining perfect vision throughout the zoom range. Finally, adjust reticle brightness if necessary so that everything within easy reach is visible on-screen. After taking these steps, you should be able to get accurate results every time!

Gallup, New Mexico is a small community in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 930 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Albuquerque and is part of the Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Taos metropolitan area. The Gallup site has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European to come to this area was Manuel de Armas in 1540 AD. In 1795, Don José Pablo Crespo y Trompeta founded a mission at Gallup, which still operates today as the San Miguel Mission School. A post office called Gallup was established in 1824 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1847 Mexican Independence War General Antonio López de Santa Anna marched through this area and burned most of the town includingMission San Miguel de Agua Caliente before retreating southward into Mexico City without taking any prisoners or loot. The community of Gallup began to grow rapidly after gold was discovered near Chihuahua City in 1859; by 1861 there were 4 stores and 30 residents living in what is now downtown Gallup. By 1870 there were 7 churches with a total population of 1123 people; by 1880 that number had risen to 3000 people with 84 businesses. Ibid., pgs 97-98
