The Gallup, New Mexico Shooting Target Holder’s Association was organized in 1912. The association is a non-profit organization that manages the shooting targets in the town of Gallup, New Mexico.
Gallup is a small town located in the County of Bernalillo, New Mexico. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, Gallup had an estimated population of 3,811. The name “Gallup” means “the place where light meets air” and it is thought to be derived from the US Cavalry Regiment's usage of the word "gallop" as a signal for stop on horseback during battle. The first Gallup settlers were those who arrived in 1876 from Colorado via Frio Rancho de las Animas near present-day Santa Fe. They were met by a group of Pueblo natives who welcomed them with food and water, but then Truchula ranchera Chief José Antonio Ellicott took over their ranch and they left. After several years they returned with more settlers led by Captain JF Gorman and Capt Manuel Flores. In 1881 they founded what would become known as Gallup Academy (now part of New Mexico State University). This school was founded to provide education for Native American children living in area around Albuquerque while their families waited for white settlement to begin. The land that now forms part of downtown Gallup was purchased from Eduardo Romero y Arroyo by Dr John Wickenheiser in 1912 after he discovered gold nearby on his property called Cerro Gordo Hill outside present day Albuquerque. Wickenheiser renamed his discovery Goldfield Hill after his find and developed it into what is today Downtown Gallup which consisted of about three blocks including two large commercial buildings on Market Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue NW built in 1914-1917 when Gulp fallout stopped sulfurous mining activity taking place thereabouts following World War I hostilities ended In 1911 Elihu Root served as assistant secretary for Indian Affairs under President William Howard Taft during his tenure as president; he later became Collector General of Customs at the same time that he headed up Interior Department's Bureau Of Indian Affairs until December 15, 1921 when he resigned due to ethical failures within that agency which included accepting bribes totaling $200,000 from various Indians! On July 14th 1906 Alfred Cahn wrote: "I am writing because I have just completed my visit to your country (New Mexico) [...] We are discussing some matters connected with our great Western Development program [...] For myself I can give you no promises [...] It seems likely that we will make some very important discoveries here." On this date government surveyor John Smeaton visited Santa Fe Valley region along Rio Grande River & Mineral Belt mines prospecting for gypsum & other minerals & surmised presence (on maps)of silver mineral veins worth millions @ $15/tonnes
