Gallup was founded on April 14, 1881 by George Gallup and his wife Anna Akhil Gallup as a wagon and ferry service between Gallup and Raton. The first store in town opened in 1883. In 1886, the Gallups built their first home. They continued to operate the business until 1912 when they sold it to Dolph Lundgren of Albuquerque for $2,000 cash. Dolph Lundgren operated Gallup's Liquor Store from 1912 until he sold it to Harry Houdini in 1933 for $10,000 cash. Harry Houdini ran the store until he bought it back from Lundgren in 1944 for $15,000 cash. The store closed its doors in 1957 but reopened briefly in 1959 before closing again for good that year. The current building that houses Gallagher's now opened on October 25th, 1947 and has been operational since then!

Today, the plaza remaining south of First Street between Monument Avenue and San Pedro Road serves as home to both the old high school (now known as East High School) and part of Plaza de Armas including two historical buildings: Casa Blanca (The White House), which served as headquarters for President Franklin D Roosevelt during World War II; and La Caja de la Mujer (The Female Box), which housed several local businesses before becoming a meeting place for women interested in political activism during the late 1800s through early 1900s Additionally, one block east of First Street on Monument Avenue stands another significant building: The Old Courthouse where New Mexico Senator Tom Cotton met with President Eisenhower on November 11th 1954 during their historic visit to Albuquerque
