Gallup is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,509 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bernalillo County. The name Gallup comes from Spanish meaning "to collect" or "to take hold of." The town was founded by Nicolas de la Garza and his family in 1847. From its inception, Gallup served as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1849, it became the first site of territorial government in what is now New Mexico. On April 20, 1850, President James K. In 1861, Gallup was besieged by Confederate troops while under US occupation during the American Civil War. The town surrendered on November 15th with no resistance and many residents were taken into captivity; some are still unaccounted for today including Juan Ortiz and Manuel Romero Martinez who are considered missing in action because they never reported back to their families until after the war ended. In 1899, Gallup's ZIP code wasqs 08701 which coincided with nearby Scotts Valley (now part of Chihuahua). However, this ZIP code has not been used since 1959 when it was combined with other rural areas within Bernalillo County to form two new ZIP codes: 07505 forgallup and 07607 forallendale
