In 1912, General George Armstrong Custer died during his battle with Cheyenne Indians at Little Bighorn and was buried at Soldiers' Hill Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas; however, his remains were not repatriated until after World War II when they were moved from Topeka to Fort Washakie National Monument in south Dakota Territory. After years of debate and protest by local citizens, Congress finally approved legislation authorizing their reburial at Arlington National Cemetery on October 1, 1948. According to the 2000 census (the latest available), the median household income for ZIP code 82015 was $50,371 (+/-$2,589). The racial makeup of this ZIP code (% non-Hispanic white) was 84% White alone (non-Hispanic), 10% Native American or Alaskan Native only (non-Hispanic), 5% other race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic) and 6% Hispanic or Latino origin (non-Hispanic). Gallup is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 10,771 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bernalillo County. The Gallup site has been inhabited by humans for over 8,000 years and is thought to be one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in North America. The area now comprising Gallup was first settled by the Puebloans in the late 15th century CE. In 1847, Columbus discovered Santa Fe and founded Albuquerque on its banks as part of his exploration of the New World. As early as 1795, José Saramago wrote about "a great City which Nobles Built" on top of a hill overlooking Santa Fe but no evidence has ever been found that this city ever existed or even had human occupants. By 1800 CE, several small villages were located within what is now Bernalillo County including Taos and Gallup. It is believed that during this time there was also some development within present-day Gallup due to trade with Puebloan settlements in nearby San Miguel and Window Rock counties as well as European settlers who began arrive in increasing numbers following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821 CE. However it would not until after Apache Chief Cochise's death did serious action take place towards developing their land around present-day Gallup proper; most likely because of Indian resistance to forced assimilation into Spanish society given their traditional cultural beliefs and practices regarding gender roles and mesquite tree hunting which were highly prized among their people. In 1847, two Mormon missionaries named George Smith and David Whitmer came through New Mexico on their way north to build an LDS church complex known today as Mesa Verde National Park near Arizpe while traveling east from Santa Fe along I-25/US 74 truck stop route (later replaced by I-40). On October 24th they arrived at what is now called Old Fort Washakie just south of present day Gallup on private property belonging to Mrs JB Hinkley opposite her ranch house still standing today atop a knoll overlooking washakie Creek valley below with extensive views across much of western New Mexico Territory then still under Mexican sovereignty They built a fortification named Fort Washakie soon after arriving which served as both a center for religious instruction for Mormons living along I-25/US 74 corridor during winter months when travel between easternArizona Territory (now Arizona) Peaks Wilderness region (containing White Sands National Monument) & west Texas Mountains Province was prohibited then also served as winter quarters for troops heading eastward via US 66 from Chihuahua Province during summer months when travel between eastern Arizona Territory Peaks Wilderness region (&west Texas Mountains Province) & southwest Colorado were unrestricted .Fort Washakie remained operational until September 14th 1858 when Mexican forces burned it resulting in many Mormon refugees fleeing northeast into wagon trains headed south towards Tucson Valley then west towards Las Vegas Valley before finally reaching Salt Lake Valley via Prescott Corridor route (now US 95) A plaque marks the site where Fort Washakie once stood . Today only remnants remains visible Of original fortifications including masonry walls 20 feet high & 3 feet thick with earthen ramparts surrounding quadrangular mound 100x50 yards large encircled by walls 25 feet tall & 3 feet thick . Also remaining are foundations associated With old stockade fence surrounding interior ditch 5x5 yards wide containing six posts each 30 inches high x 16 inches diameter @ ground level . Site includes earthwork ramparts older than wall structure itself contemporary with original defensive measures . Although destroyed by fire circa 1840s most likely caused by cattle roundup conducted adjacent ranch property this historic site provides significant insight intoOld West Native American culture
