Gallup is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gallup-Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Gallup" comes from Andrew Galloway and his brother John, who surveyed the area for land grants in 1826. The townsite that now makes up much of Gallup was settled by Arikara people in 1846. In 1863, General George Armstrong Custer Battlefield National Monument was established near present-day Gallup after he was killed there during the Battle of Gettysburg. This event helped make Gallup a popular tourist destination because it became known as "Custer's Last Stand". In 1906, oil fields were discovered in the area and began to be developed; this led to increased traffic and development around town. A post office was established at Gallup in 1907; it remained operational until 1959. In 1912, Fort Sumner National Monument (later renamed Fort Bliss) was established east of town on what is now USFS Road 191. As Fort Bliss grew larger and more complex, management passed out to Army Corps of Engineers which continued managing it until its closure in 1996; then it reverted back to Army control until 2004 when it became part of the Bureau of Land Management as part of Gold King Mine Regional District No. 8 . In 1951, work began on building what would become both one of New Mexico's largest high schools - Navajo HS - as well as an important research center for mesquite oil production located adjacent to defendant's rancho de la Paz Winery & Vineyard Ranch (). When completed in 1957, Navajo HS served as one half of a dual school system that also included Roosevelt HS (now Roosevelt High School) across from downtown while La Cueva Campus housed Mesa Verde College and other various colleges/universities within easy walking distance (). 1
