When Gallup, New Mexico, was founded in 1912 it had only a handful of residents. Gallup is a town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census, making Gallup one of the most populous towns in New Mexico. It is located on the Rio Grande northeast of Albuquerque and southwest of Farmington. The first permanent English-speaking settler in what is now Gallup was James Hutton who arrived during Spanish colonial times and named it San Miguel de Allende after his hometown of Madrid, Spain. In 1847 John Wesley Powell explored and mapped the Chihuahuan Desert and named it Washakie after Washakie, an Indigenous American man he encountered near White Sands National Monument in 1912. In 1881, George Sarton moved to Gallup from Santa Fe with his family. He became president of University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1902 and donated land for its campus across from the old train station which would become home to UNM's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 1905 construction began on First United Methodist Church which was completed in 1907. The building still stands today as part of Gallup's cultural center complex known as "The Square." In 1911 Rudolph Jelinek founded Rancho Bernardo del Apache with land that he had acquired east of present-day Gallup along the base of Mount Bernardo. In 1912, the New Mexico Territorial Legislature created a new government for New Mexico. The Territorial Legislature also established a Board of Education to provide education for the population in the territory. The board was later changed to the School Districts Commission and then to the School Districts Authority. The first school in Santa Fe opened in 1881. In 1907, a high school was built and named after Judge Edwin Fenton Wakefield of Albuquerque. A secondary school was built in 1911 and called Santa Fe Latin High School; it closed in 1943. A junior high school was built in 1921 and called Roosevelt High School; it closed in 1959. A senior high school was built in 1957 and called Don Pedro Sanchez HS; it closed in 1984. In 1966, the New Mexico Legislature passed an act establishing a mascot for schools within the territory: Blue Jay (later known as Puma). The act also authorized use of any name that has been recommended by an advisory committee composed of educators, business people, government officials, local boosters, and fans of college football or baseball who have testified thereto at least twice before an assemblyman from each county within New Mexico is chosen chairman with responsibility for selecting a name for each public high school within one year after adopting such suggestion by him or her
