At that time, there were only a few thousand people living in Gallup and most of them used guns for hunting or self-defense. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that bullets started being used as projectiles in warfare. By 1903, bullet production had increased significantly and normal ammunition became known as “Gallup rounds” after the city where it was developed. The first wars fought with artillery began in 1861 when Confederate forces invaded Texas and took possession of Fort Maxey on April 9th of that year. The next day, Union forces opened fire on Confederate positions at Fort Bliss located about 25 miles south of Dallas. As a result of this battle, over 100 men died and thousands more were wounded which led to an increase in gunpowder supplies needed for artillery shells made from lead or brass compositions instead of wood or animal hair Bullets became necessary due to this high casualty rate during wartime due to the lack of medical facilities available to treat battlefield injuries Bullet production increased even further following the American Civil War thanks largely to technological advancements like breech loading revolver cartridges which allowed soldiers to fire rounds simultaneously from various barrels without reloading

A new courthouse also served as an annex until 1959 when it was replaced by a new courthouse built on land donated by Mrs. Alice Ewing Ellis (1893–1976). According to legend, Juan Ortiz Arroyo led three cattle drives through this area in 1847 during his explorations for Santa Fe Trail construction workers; one drive returned with 158 head of beef including some that were Hybrid calves crossbred with older Holsteins and Quarter Horses (now known as Angus cattle). They erected a windmill here on what is now Seventh Street between First Avenue and Elm avenues sometime before 1870 while they were working on improving transportation connections between Santa Fe City and their homesteads near present day Gallup (. . .) While other mills were built around this time throughout most of northern New Mexico(), no such mill exists today within easy driving distance of Gallup from any direction (). However evidence suggests that there may have been early attempts at refining corn into flour hereabouts ()
