The history of bipods can be traced back to the early days of Gallup. The area that is now Gallup was originally inhabited by the Hopi people. In 1847, a group of settlers from New Mexico started to arrive in Gallup. They were looking for land to start a new life and were not happy with what they found. One of the settlers, John Hodge, decided to build a cabin on the mesa overlooking the town. He named his cabin Hodge's Hole because he thought it would be a good place to escape the heat and dust that was typical of their surroundings in New Mexico. The first occupants of Hodge's Hole were John Ayden and his wife Sarah Ayden. They had two children, John Jr. and Martha Ayden Hodge. Hodge's Hole continued to be used as a house and store until 1861 when it was replaced by The Gilded Cage which stands today on State Route 66 between Gallup and Pecos City. It was built by Charles Goodyear who served as Mayor of Gallup from 1865-1867 and again from 1876-1879. Goodyear wanted an establishment in town that would provide him with goods needed for his business ventures such as flour, cattle, hides, coal, etc., so he decided to build an office building adjacent to his storeroom so that customers could buy all these items at once instead of having them purchase one item then leaving without anything else! This structure still stands today on State Route 66 between Gallup and Pecos City! In 1912, another building called The Golden Spike was built next door to The Gilded Cage on State Route 66 between Gallup and Pecos City. This building housed offices for the local post office as well as storage for various items bought by residents during their drives up or down State Route 66! Today this building still stands! In 1932, another building called The Prominence was erected next door to The Golden Spike on State Route 66 between Gallup and Pecos City which housed an ice cream parlor known as Sundowner’s Dairy while also serving as a movie theater! Today this structure still stands!
