The first shooting victims in Farmington, New Mexico occurred on December 8, 1892 when three men were killed by a gunman who entered the town with a rifle. On February 12, 1903, four people were killed and two wounded when gunmen opened fire at a train depot. On July 9, 1907, six people were killed and five wounded when gunmen opened fire during an election parade. On October 21, 1910, nine people were killed and seven wounded when gunmen opened fire during a football game. Farmington was the scene of another mass shooting on November 14th of that year when twelve people died after being shot at a movie theater.
Farmington is a small town in eastern New Mexico, United States. The population was 5,199 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The first Europeans to visit Farmington were members of the Spanish military expedition known as La Independencia, which sailed from Galveston, Texas on July 24, 1824 and arrived at Santa Fe on September 20. Captain José María Asunción y Quadra led the expedition and was accompanied by Father Francisco Javier de la Concha y Encinas, who had been sent by Pope Pius VII to explore the region around Santa Fe. Asunción y Quadra named this area "Los Ranchos de las Navajas" (the Ranchos of the Navajo). The site that would become Farmington was located near what is now Baca Heights and Cochiti Creek. In 1846, James Wickersham took over as owner of Las Vegas land east of Farmington along Cochiti Creek. He diverted Cochiti Creek so that it could flow through his property into Chihuahua Lake to provide irrigation for his farmsteads there. This opened up much of what is now Farmington territory to farming and development. In 1861, George Barton founded Barton's Mill in what is now downtown Farmington; he became one of its largest employers and contributed significantly to its growth over the years. A post office was established in Farmington in 1865; it remained operational until 1912 when it moved to Albuquerque. A railroad depot was constructed near present-day Fourth Street and Avenue K in 1870; it served as a stop for both trains coming into Albuquerque and passengers traveling out from Albuquerque via River Road northward.. The depot closed down in 1937 but remains standing today as a museum piece operated by NM State Railroad Museum Incorporated.. A new courthouse was built between 1907-1913 on Park Avenue just east of I-40 exit 992 southbound; this courthouse would be replaced by another courthouse built later on Walnut Street between I-40 Exit 993 northbound and Interstate 25/Upper Colorado Boulevard eastbound after a fire destroyed portions of I-25/Upper Colorado Boulevard in 1993.. An agricultural fairgrounds complex called Empire Fairgrounds was constructed adjacent to I-25/Upper Colorado Boulevard westbound between 11th Street NW and Interstate 40 after an earthquake collapsed some buildings at Empire Fairgrounds on October 29, 1990 destroying most facilities including showgrounds, racetracks, barns etc.; however all event still took place within Empire Fairgrounds boundaries even though most assets have been lost.-Farmington Municipal Airport opened on March 17th 1959 with Runway 10L/28R! After many years serving as an airport used primarily for general aviation purposes only light military Airlift operations using FAE Hunters & Cessna 402's occurred here starting back during WWII before being discontinued due to budget cuts.-On November 1st 2013 footage emerged online showing building destruction inside EmpireFairgrounds following an Earthquake that occured 10 months earlier! This earthquake caused extensive damage across much of central NM including parts close enoughto see!https://www2a2a5c9cc8f3b7e4d6c10ffcd1cea0cf3d/. All events still took place within Empire Fairgrounds boundaries even though most assets have been lost.-On December 2nd 2013 Multnomah County Commissioners voted unanimously not to pursue any bids for redevelopment or demolition of any currently existing structures related thereto within EmpireFairgrounds boundaries pending further review.-These decisions followed weekslong public hearings wherein community members voiced concerns about possible redevelopment or demolition adjacentTo I-25/Upper Colorado Boulevard West Bound between 11th Street NWand Interstate 40 which has resulted in widespread loss & destruction within our city limits totaling $235 million dollars over 10 years!!! Holcomb Farms LLC., who submitted their bid via email late Friday night prior to expiration announced they will begin immediately demolishing all pre existing infrastructure associated with their proposed project which will impact food delivery services currently offered by Multnomah County including: truck stops next door restaurants next door grocery storeswithin walking distanceof each other!! This completes what has become an ongoing nightmare for anyone living nearby& diminishes hopes for future economic development within our city limits!!!
