Farmington's economy is based on agriculture and ranching. The first people to live in what is now Farmington were Native Americans. They called it "Thorny Hill." The Arapaho and Apache Indians lived here for many years until they were forced out by white settlers in 1847. The first post office was established in Farmington on October 20, 1851, by Jno. Witherspoon. The name of the town changed several times during its early days; finally it was chosen as the name for the new courthouse in 1893 when all other towns within Dona Ana County had been renamed after Ulysses S. Grant or Benjamin Franklin Roosevelt (see also:Dona Ana County). In 1905, Stephen Fenton opened a grocery store in what is now downtown Farmington and soon became one of the leading stores in southeastern New Mexico. He donated his land to make way for Stroud-Fenton Park which still stands today as one of central Park Cities throughout southern New Mexico consisting of more than 25 parks including 2 golf courses and 5 baseball diamonds complexes with over $100 million dollars worth of public projects completed there since its creation including an amphitheater, convention center and library/museum complex that opened in 2007 adjacent to Interstate 10/. In 1912 he donated another piece of property - this time along State Route 66 - which became known as Fenton Place across from Interstate 10/US 64 Business near Mescalero Hills High School today home toNearly 150 businesses situated along I-10 corridors with numerous services including health clinics,. physical education and recreation facilities,. arts & crafts stores,. pharmacies etc.. It has become known as "the heart of Park Cities" due to its location just minutes' walk from most park areas making it easy for residents & tourists alike to enjoy all that this thriving community has to offer! A number of events have taken place throughout history at Fenton Place such as concerts by country music stars like Hank Williams Jr., Willie Nelson and Vince Gill, state fairs like Expo '87, '91,'97&2001,,international bird shows (20th century), Balloon Fiesta (2010) & rodeo(2015). Farmington is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 6,702 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. Farmington was founded in 1827 by Capt. Jacob Riis as a trading post on the Rio Grande. The present town was laid out in 1872 by John P. Morrill and named for him after his home state of Maine. The first settlers to Farmington were Englishmen who arrived from Massachusetts in 1827 and set up a log cabin near what is now Main Street. They were followed by Germans, who came from Baden am Rhein in 1829 and started a bed and breakfast called the German House Hotel next door to where the First National Bank still stands today on Main Street. Finally, Americans came in 1832 when Willard Cole established land east of Main Street and named it Farmsborough after his home state of Maine. In 1840, an act was passed providing for township organization within New Mexico; this act created Farmington Township, which had its start date of March 3, 1840 with only eight people living there—six men and two women—all farmers or their families plus one Indian Ute man named George Jourdain (or Joe). On October 11th that year, just five days after Captain Jacob Riis’ death at age 47 during a party exploring new Mexican territory northwest of Santa Fe, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Utes removed from New Mexico soil because they were considered hostile Indians under Spanish law and not subject to American jurisdiction like other Native Americans living within the territory! As such, George Jourdain became “the last Indian to surrender his holdings” within Farmington Township according to historian Don Armstrong. At first light on November 5th 1830 (Thursday), over 400 mounted soldiers led by Colonel Augustus DeWolfney crossed the Rio Grande at Taos Station about 20 miles north-northwest of Fort Sumner near present-day Roswell Park while marching southward along what is now Roosevelt Boulevard toward Socorro Valley across from what is now Mesa Verde National Monument! At noon that day they reached upon reaching Socorro Valley unopposed another great accomplishment for America as well as providing momentum for military campaigns against Apache natives later throughout Arizona! Army troopers killed manyApache warriors during this campaign including their leader Black Hawk whose bodylay outside Cathedral Gorge near Alamosa until 1899 when it was finally discovered!! Today marks November 5th each year as Colusa County's Pioneer Day recognizing this important event in history! As time went on more people started arriving into Farmington; some coming direct from settlements such as Roswell or Gallup due to new opportunities opened up following the Gold Rush era which began around 1850 throughout much of California but especially northern New Mexico Territory including parts of Albuquerque proper! In 1863 Major General Hugh Wills decided to make use of newly acquired Rancho San Pedro Sula grants located east/northeast of present day Tucson along part of modern Interstate 10 just south/southeastof I-25 & US 60 between Tuscon & Phoenix however all these parcels ultimately reverted back to native ownership once gold mining ceased operations hereabouts beginning around 1880 regardless! By 1870 there were 1,500+ citizens residing within FARMINGTON Twp., mainly rural farmers subsistence raising livestock & grow crops; few working inside public services) . By 1910 Census there numbered 6 702 residents living therein making it one OF THE LARGEST CITIES IN NEW MEXICO WITH A POPULATION OF OVER 100K NOBLE MEMBERS!!!
