The town began as a small settlement in 1872, when two men named John Fenton and Edward Irving established a farm near what is now downtown Farmington Hills. They called their farm "The Gables." The first post office was established in 1875, and the first store was opened in 1876. In 1904, the town acquired its current name, after incorporation by vote of the residents.

Farms, ranches, and small businesses dotted the landscape in Farmington until recently when they have all been replaced by high-tech startups. The first settlers to Farmington arrived in 1827. They were farmers who brought over their own land and started to cultivate it. By 1840, there were several families living in Farmington with over 100 acres of land cultivated. In 1847, James Ahern married Anna Maria Cisneros and began operating a store in downtown Farmington. Over time, other business owners followed suit and many different types of businesses flourished within the community. In 1909, JF Dominguez opened his restaurant on Main Street which became one of the most popular places for locals to gather during lunchtime. This type of restaurant is still present today as a cornerstone of the community's cultural heritage. In 1923, Harry Smedley opened his grocery store on Elm Street which housed one of the first convenience stores in Albuquerque County! Today's version of Smedley's offers personal shoppers an extensive selection of groceries as well as prepared foods and spirits available 24/7! During World War II, many local residents took up arms against Nazi Germany; some even went so far as to serve in combat! After the war ended, many people returned to their previous occupations but also decided to stay in town and start new businesses that would contribute to their local communities' economies like carpentry or engineering! Today there are numerous organizations that focus on promoting peaceful resolution through dialogue and learning including: Santa Fe Humanities Center (SFHC), Garden District Museum (GDM), Monterey Park School District (MPSD), Bernalillo County Historical Society (BCHS), Albuquerque Chamber Orchestra (ACHO), NM Department Of Education - History Office & Archives Branch (NMDEHB), Albuquerque Public Library System - Children’s Literature Branch (PLSCB)
Farmington was founded in 1827 by John P. Gaines and his family. The town grew rapidly after it became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1857, Farmington became a county seat and remained so until 1912. The post office within the town continued to serve until 1959.
