Farmington is a small, independent town in northern New Mexico. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Las Vegas, NM Metropolitan Statistical Area. Farmington is known for its agriculture and ranching industries, as well as its annual cowboy or fair which takes place in early September. The townsite of what is now Farmington was first settled by American Indians in the 17th century. In 1827, Samuel Morse established a post office here; it was renamed Farmington on July 1, 1886. The city of Farmington official incorporation began on May 25, 1912. Farmington's rich agricultural history began with its founding by Captain John Prentiss of the Pike's Peak Land Company in 1879. By 1905, farmsteads were scattered throughout east and northeast New Mexico; however, only one percent of New Mexican farmland had been purchased by ranchers since 1880. This changed when oil drilling discoveries became available in nearby Los Alamos County during the 1920s and 1930s; within 10 years oil production had increased to such an extent that ranchers began to buy up land throughout eastern and northeast New Mexico Territory (except for Taos County) to build wells for storage and export from their ranches. This led to what has become known as "the Rancho period" of Farmington's history - a time when many farms grew into large conglomerates whose holdings spanned entire counties or included portions of several counties An example of this type of operation would be Cimarron Oil & Gas Corporation (founded 1949), an energy company that owns leases on over 2 million acres across nine states including most recently Texas interests in shale formations offshore near Corpus Christi). Ayn Rand wrote about her experiences working at Cimarron during this time: "It didn't matter whether I drove my truck through sand dunes orchards ringing with music from doves cooing overhead - I knew where I was going because somebody had told me so." Farmington is a small town located in the east-central part of New Mexico. The incorporated village of Farmington was established on March 12, 1881, when it was named after General John A. Ferguson, who had been mentioned in a resolution passed by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature earlier that year. The population of Farmington peaked at 1,500 in 1910 and has since decreased to around 500 residents today. The first settler in what is now Farmington was George Fenton, who arrived there in 1848. He built a log cabin near the present day intersection of U.S. Routes 20 and 66. Other early settlers included Hiram Sowerby and his family from Ohio; James Prentice from Vermont; and George Stephenson from Scotland. By 1860, only about 30 people were living in Farmington proper while neighboring towns like White Sands and Las Cruces counted more than 100 residents apiece. In 1861, the United States acquired Rancho San Miguel de los Alamos from Mexico for $10 per acre (approximately $2 million at current prices). This land lay betweenpresent-day Farmington and White Sands with an approximate width of one mile (1 kilometer). In order to purchase this property, Captain Ebenezer Chivington paid Mexican officials $3 per head for five Indian men as well as horses and mules worth another $5 per head plus expenses incurred transporting goods to Los Alamos overland via Santa Fe Trail wagon road during October 1861- November 1862 – all without any payment into escrow or guarantee of delivery! Upon arrival at Los Alamos on October 25th, 1861, topetters found “a great many encouraging evidences that some human beings had resided hereabouts for some time past” which alerted them to the potential for growth within their new community should they choose to develop it further… The Mexicans eventually sold out this claim to Captian Chivington for just $2 an acre (approximately $160 total at current prices)! This initial investment successfully spawned several other ranching lumber businesses including Cimarron Lumber Company founded by Wm Hulbert & Co.; Johnnie’s Lumber Company also founded by Wm Hulbert & Co.; Topeka Lumberyard erected by Nels Nelson; Gorman Bros., Incorporated became known as Gorman Timberyards; Bushnell Manufacturing Company began manufacturing saddles & bridles under license from Kossuth Saddlery Manufacturer’s Association Ltd.; Bedloe Farms begins growing corn & hay on patented land northwest of present day town limits where later they would construct a water tower which still stands today (& now serves as a museum); Beaumont Mills begins producing flour starting out with ground beef but soon expanding into other products such as flour tortillas; finally Donnybrook Coal Mine opens up providing coal Transportation started/ continued through both World Wars I&II along US Route 666 running northeasterly out of Gallup NM until its closure circa 1945
