Farmington is a town in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 9,661 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Antelope Valley and is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Farmington arrived in 1829. They were led by José de la Peña y Arce. The town was platted in 1847 by John Sutter and named after him, Farmington Hills, Michigan. On July 11, 1850, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at Fort Donelson to American General Ulysses S. Grant and his army under General Winfield Scott. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded all of New Mexico east of Rio Grande to America for $5 million dollars plus an additional $2 million payable every year until it was paid off in 20$ treasury notes.
