Farmington, New Mexico is a town in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grant County. Farmington was founded by Mormons in 1847 as a small settlement on the Santa Fe Trail. The town was named after Holster's Rancho de la Hacienda de los Troncos, which was located east of present-day Farmington and west of Tucson. In 1860, Brigham Young organized the LDS Church in Farmington and called it Nauvoo. The first Mormon temple was built here in 1870 (the current Temple Block is from this period). As part of its effort to attract non-Mormons to Mormonism, Brigham Young ordered that all male citizens age 12 or older be issued holsters with pistols to keep them safe while travelling on horseback around Nauvoo. This order resulted in many young men becoming involved in banditry and robbery throughout Hancock County and surrounding areas during the 1850s and 1860s. The Panic of 1893 caused a decrease in business activity for both Mormon settlers and businesses within Nauvoo due to concerns about possible detection by federal investigators looking for violations of laws related to currency counterfeiting or other financial irregularities. Businesses closed their doors for weeks at a time during 1893-1894 due to lack of customers; however, these closures did not prevent Mormon pioneers from continuing their journey westward into what is now Arizona Territory through New Mexico Territory until they reached Utah Valley Railroad Station on November 24, 1894. With no active settlements left within Hancock County following the end of the Pioneer Era there were few opportunities for local inhabitants to interact with outsiders; however, some individuals who had remained behind developed trade relationships with various herbalists and traders along the southern borderlands beginning around 1840s thanks to colonization efforts by Mexican Americans seeking land grants northward. These interactions also led some members of local families who had settled near Hudspeth Creek before 1830s – such as Jerusha (married c1800/1800s)and her brother Isaac (born c1790) –to begin ranching operations near present-day Farmington between 1800–1840s; these ranchers engaged in farming activities such as raising livestock and beans for sale along Highway 66 southward from Pima City into northeastern Arizona Territory before reaching New Mexico Territory around 1867 via wagon train route known as “The Great Northern Road” due primarily to Spanish influence across central Arizona region prior to American exploration starting in 1868 Following American occupation forces' entry into Albuquerque on September 16th 1914 following World War I efforts by Ulysses S Grantauthorized Apr 1916 increasein Sheriff dutiesfrom Patrolman TO Deputy Sheriff positions several hundred miles northeastofAlbuquerque [1] numerous Mexican nationals living eastofAlbuquerque were rounded up & jailed without charges or trial& held incommunicado pending deportation back home under government orders until early 1918 when most were released[2] much later information indicates that those detained may have been either deported back home or may have died awaiting transport back home

The name "Farmington" comes from the Spanish language word "farmántico," meaning "farm owner." The first post office in Farmington was established on October 15, 1877. The current post office building was built in 1924 and is located on Main Street. The settlement of Farmington began to grow around 1785 when Pierre de la Garza founded a rancho (land grant) known as Rancho San Francisco de las Cruces y del Río Grande near what is now downtown Farmington. In 1825, José Antonio Mejía purchased some land southwest of present-day Farmington and began to develop it into what would become known as Rancho Viejo de Estados Unidos (Old American Ranch). On July 1, 1830, Miguel Hidalgo sold 640 acres of land east of present-day FarmINGTON to José Castro for $2 per acre ($ ). This donation by Miguel Hidalgo marks the beginning of what would become one of New Mexico's most prosperous agricultural communities. In 1883, George Heeney became involved with farming activities in Albuquerque when he purchased 4200 acres north of Albuquerque from José Castro for $6 per acre ($ ). George Heeney and his wife Anna were instrumental in developing the commercial crop production that would characterize much of what exists today within the boundaries of Schoolcraft County Agricultural District No. XI: These early days saw initial growth due to new technology brought over from Illinois; machinery then being developed specifically for this type of agriculture allowed farmers more flexibility with their methods while also maximizing yields through irrigation systems that utilized canals dug through hillsides bordering streams which provided natural water sources necessary for crops grown on these soils: Improved seed varieties were developed by Heeney himself along with cereal strains selected specifically for this type Of Farming or Soil Science before markets ever opened up elsewhere; dairying operations soon followed suit not only providing milk but eggs as well once free range chickens had been introduced into the mix For many years until well after World War II major dairy products exports went out to California via railroads carrying fresh cow/calf milk back downstate while fresh cheese product traveled up Interstate 10 To say that during those early days things really did change Would be an understatement! Today there are still a few old timers who continue to farm along those same roads and riverside valleys including my very own grandfather who resides in Old Saybrook just outside downtown FarmINGTON today!
