Farmington is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Farmington County. The name came from French Fort Doniphan, which was founded in 1799 by French colonists and then sold to the U.S. government in 1800 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. From 1821 to 1912 it was called San Miguel de Allende (San Miguel because it served as the capital of Coahuila and Texas before Austin became its capital). The history of Farmington stretches back more than 200 years and can be traced to early pioneers who settled here on land that now includes much of downtown and parts of north central Mesa County. They were farmers and ranchers who developed a strong commercial trade with nearby Albuquerque, Nuevo Laredo, Tehuantepec City, Ciudad Juárez and Puebla City before becoming settlers themselves. In 1881, local residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Farmington." By 1907 there had been rapid growth due to irrigation projects brought about by ranchers such as John Moffatt and Waddell Stephenson; during this time many new businesses were established including two banks - First National Bank (founded 1888) and New Mexico State Bank (opened 1909). The first post office opened in Farmington on April 1, 1908. A fire destroyed most of downtown Business District on December 4th 1904 making it necessary for all business owners within 5 blocks or so closed their doors until January 1905 when a new building was erected beside First National Bank just south of Market Street where today's Main Library stands. In 1916 Central School District #2 merged with Farmington Township schools creating what is now known as Mesa Community Schools District No 2-East Campus In 1922 Union Pacific Railroad built an depot at corner Main Street & Meridian Avenue which became home over time to several Department store/cafeteria chains including JCPenney (1924), Marshall Field's department store chain (1929), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s department store chain (1939), Kmart (1986) followed by Safeway Incorporated in 1990; finally SuperValu Stores took over operations from Safeway in 2006! On October 8th 1913 James Ewing organized the first football game ever played between East High School 64-0 against West Side High School at legendary old Municipal Stadium east side town limits! On November 7th 1915 Valley Farms Creamery won first prize at state fair for soft serve ice cream specialties! In 1921 El Paso Natural Gas Company drilled into what would become present day South Mesa but did not open up production until 1928 when they changed their name to Empire Oil Company! Empire Oil Company bought Corpus Christi Independent Petroleum Corporation effective date January 1st 1932! On November 3rd 1938 US Airways moved their headquarters from Dallas TX to Farmington NM !! This event signaled beginning of an era marked by technological advances leading eventually directly thereto for one major employer - Aviation!!!! Farmington, New Mexico is a small town in the San Miguel County located about sixty miles east of Albuquerque. The population was 7,994 at the 2010 census. It is one of three communities in the county that were established as Rancho Arroyo Seco settlements in 1879 by Mormons who had come to New Mexico from Utah. The other two are Socorro and Hobbs. The downtown area of Farmington is a mixture of Federal architecture dating back to early 1800s, ranch homes built during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and modern buildings constructed since World War II. The Mission San José de Guadalupe remains an important landmark in Farmington's history. The first settlers in what would become Farmington arrived on November 21, 1879 when Mormon pioneers led by George Atherton founded Rancho Arroyo Seco west of Socorro. By 1881, there were 10 residents living on the ranch. In 1902-3, there were 30 residents living on the ranch; by 1910, it had reached its present size with 64 residents living on it . At this time, there was also a Catholic church and school system operated by Mexican priests called la Iglesia Católica de las Americas (the Church of America). In 1916-17 farmINGTON voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government under the direction of Mayor Leland Meeks with powers including voter registration and municipal services such as street cleaning and garbage collection. On January 1, 1917 City Hall opened after two years of construction which cost $140,000 dollars . In 1922-23 city officials decided not to annex any additional land from neighboring Socorro so as not to create another municipality within San Miguel County; instead they developed a plan for combining all three municipalities into one entity known as "Families' Union." However this proposal failed to gain approval from either side so finally on September 15th 1923 Families' Union became "Farmington" through an act of the state legislature . A post office was established at Farmington on October 12th 1881 (). Farmington was founded in 1847 by George Washington Carver and his wife Lillie. The town gradually grew as a result of its location on the Arkansas River, which provided access to land and resources. In 1880, Farmington joined the United States Census as a city. It continued to grow until 1925 when it merged with nearby Roswell to form the current city of Roswell.
