Farmington, New Mexico is a town located in southeastern New Mexico. The population was 3,854 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alta County. Farmington is named after Colonel Samuel Funk and his family who founded the town in 1875. Farming has been a majorstay in the community since its founding. The area now known as Farmington was first inhabited by Native American tribes including the Anasazi and Pueblo of Cuatro Rayados. In 1847, José María Morelos discovered gold at Rancho San Vicente de la Frontera which sparked settlers to arrive in what is now Farmington from all over New Mexico Territory. The first store opened in Farmington on July 8, 1875 by Fenton Cramer with four barrels of oil for sale and $5 worth of goods for rent to local farmers Farming became an important part of life for many people early on in Farmington’s history. A lot of this came from Captain John Doherty who ran a ferry service between Indianola (now Albuquerque) and Farmington until he died in 1865 Doherty had started out as a farm laborer before becoming one of the most successful merchants in central New Mexico during the early 1800s In 1881, General James Hatton arrived at Fort Bliss with plans to march on Santa Fe but were instead forced to retreat because they did not have water or ammunition Hatton ordered his men to destroy any crops they found so that there would be no food around when they attacked Santa Fe This event led to much merriment among settlers as it demonstrated how determined Hatton and his men were It wasn’t until 1898 when another general decided to attack Santa Fe that things began truly changing for Farmsindians That year, Antonio López de Santa Anna marched into Fort Bliss with 5,000 troops lookingto take down Mexican president Agustín Vasquez Moreno y Zavala Santa Anna failed completely at attacking Santa Fe and turned back only after reinforcements arrived from Arizona under General Fernando Romero y Costilla arriving on October 15th 1898 A little more than two years later (October 25th 1899), United States forces landed at Corrales beach near Presente also lookingto takedown Mexican president Porfirio Diaz Vigil y Costilla

Farmington is a small city in the US state of New Mexico. It is the seat of Fannin County. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pecos River, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Albuquerque and 40 miles (64 km) south-southwest of Taos. The first settler in Farmington was Jacobus Cornelius van der Velde who arrived in 1827 from Holland. He built a log cabin on what is now State Street and named it Van der Velde's Campground after himself and his family. In 1830, Simon Bolivar Sanchez, also from Holland landed at what is now Farmington with his family and set up a farmstead known as Sanchez's Fort on the east bank of the Pecos River. By 1840, there were over 30 Dutch families living in Farmington and its environs. During Apache Wars (1846-1847), many people fled to remote areas in search of safety or opportunity while hostilities raged around them; some settled permanently within Farmington limits during this time period. Some may have returned years later when hostilities ended but most remained away for good until after Mexican independenceumbled in 1912 when most residents re-joined American society. In 1868, three men – Elisha Blackman, George Waddell & John Dolan – came to Farmington from Kansas City and organized what would become Fannin County Agricultural Society which functioned as a marketing board for local farmers selling their produce throughout central New Mexico Territory. With help from James Kelly founder/director/manager of Santa Fe Railroad’s extension office west of Albuquerque - which had opened up new territory through central New Mexico - Fannin County became one of the largest cattle drives in North America! On July 4th 1870 wagonloads full of beef cattle driven by Hernando de Soto Expedition crossed into present day New Mexico Territory via Carlsbad Pass near present day Farmington; these events are generally considered birthdays for both de Soto Expedition and Rancho San Antonio de la Frontera [now Bacaue], both located within today’s town limits
The first people to live in Farmington were the Hidatsa. The town was named after a Creek word meaning "place where water gathers." The Hidatsa were the first Native American tribe to move into what is now Farmington. They called the area Mescalosa because of the abundance of mescal trees that grew there. The town was founded by Captain James Cook in 1786 during his exploration of the Southwest. He and his men, along with some Hidatsa, built a trading post near what is now downtown Farmington. The post served as a base from which they explored parts of central New Mexico and Arizona. In 1810, Rancho San Pedro de Alvarado was granted to Carlos Antonio Valencia by Santa Fe Governor Manuel Micheltorena for 160 acres (6 hectares). This land extended from present-day University Boulevard east to Asociación Road and west to Pecos River. It was part of Rancho Vallecitos, which also included parts of Albuquerque and Roswell. Valencia sold title to this land in 1825 to Donald Armstrong for $3,000 cash plus interest on $8,000 he had already paid for it from previous sales. In 1827, Armstrong established a ranch at what is now Alpine Village on opposite sides of US Route 66 from Farmington proper. His cattle drove wild herds across much of New Mexico until their extermination in 1865 by cowboy riders led by Pat Garrett himself
