The company manufactured rifle sights and pistols for the Union and Confederate armies. In 1865, when the American Civil War ended, the company merged with another firearms manufacturer, Peddle & Reed, to form Peddle & Reed Guns Company. The company continued making rifle sights and pistols until 1911. In that year, Peddle & Reed merged with Winchester Corporation to form Winchester Arms Corporation. Winchester Arms Corporation continued making rifle sights until it was sold to Browning Firearms Corporation in 1966. Browning Firearms Corporation continued making rifle sights until it was bought by Glock Incorporated in 1999. Glock Incorporated continues making barrel-mounted pistol sights today.

Farmington is first mentioned in 1795 as part of Nuevo Rancho de Santa Inés, an adobe ranch that extended from what is now downtown to the east and north. One of the earliest businesses to open in Farmington was the administration building for El Paso and Rio Grande Railroad Company which operated out of what is now Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue (now West Broadway). A local hardware store erected a four-story wooden frame structure on Church Street in 1856 which served as a depot for goods arriving by steamboat through Fort Union's locks onto ranches south of San Miguel River. A two-story brick structure were built across First Avenue from Main Street between 1850 and 1852; it housed both post office and jail facilities until 1902 when they were moved to what is currently Fourth Street off I-10W . In 1863–1964, nine churches were built at various locations throughout town: seven larger denominations followed by five smaller sects including Jehovah's Witnesses who established their own congregation in 1906 on Third Street adjacent to Pioneer Cemetery ). In 1916–1967 only three stores remained open: one general store (later replaced by Walmart), one drygoods store (later replaced by Magellan’s) & one bakery/canned goods store (later replaced by Hormel's). By 1938 there were only six residences remaining Downtown while over 50 businesses had closed since 1920 making it one of America’s most rapidly disappearing towns . Seventy percent all buildings have been destroyed or are no longer extant leaving behind only foundations enclosing some pre-existing structures such as this old bank building on FourthStreet
The first permanent settler in Farmington was John Smith, who arrived in 1827. The town began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Santa Fe Trail in 1846, and by 1870, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, Farmington became the capital of New Mexico due to its location on the border between Arizona and New Mexico. The city remained an important center for government and commerce until 1898, when it was destroyed in a fire.
