Farmington is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to sight what would become Farmington was Lt. James Bowie in 1799 while exploring Chihuahua state in search of a new route to Texas. He named the area "Farms" after his home farm in England where he had been stationed during the French and Mexican War (1813-1821). Farmington's early history can be traced back to 1847 when it became an outpost on Rancho Viejo near modern day Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Here cattle were herded for sale by Captain George Armstrong Custer as part of his bid for control over southern New Mexico Territory prior to its becoming part of the United States in 1848. When New Mexicans voted overwhelmingly against Ulysses S. Grant’s election as President in 1880, violence broke out between those who wanted annexation into the United States and those who opposed it This led to armed conflict that climaxed with the massacre of fifty people at Adobe Hills on October 10, 1881 by members of a posse sponsored by mounted U.S Cavalry unit seeking revenge for previous losses at San Miguel County Fair two weeks earlier In 1886, following passage of an act authorizing incorporation as a city, Mayor Wm Halsey Ballam erected a frame courthouse and jail within one year which served until 1902 when both structures were destroyed by fire . A post office operated from 1887-1902 under name "Farmington", but no mail arrived there until 1911 . From 1886 until 1912, only Spanish language newspapers grew here: La Nación (later El Norte) and La Gaceta twice weekly . American newspapers began arriving gradually starting with The Republican on December 3, 1912 . In 1907–08 permission was granted from Congress for oil wells to be drilled off Rancho Viejo property resulting in increased development around town . By 1915 all surface water had been pumped from several hundred acres westward along Pima Creek resulting in formation that now lies beneath FarmINGTON proper and Interstate 25 just north In 1916 Dickinson Petroleum built an open wellhead field about three miles northwest of downtown through Anasazi earthworks adjacent to US Highway 66 thus spawning what would eventually become known as Dickinson Well Service Co., Incorporated 1947 became Dia Natural Resources Corporation 1952 Upon expiration of their lease they leased land east side Of I-25 & south side Of Rio Grande River

In 1851 Colonel George Fenton organized the United States Cavalry for service in Fremont County during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Fenton purchased 2 square miles (4 km²) from José Valdez for $1,000 after returning from his Mission San Carlos de Tolosa expedition with General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army on May 20, 1847. On October 8th of that year he sold 1/8 mile wide strip of land running north-south on Fish Creek eastward to Fort Rice which he improvements including adobe walls and a stockade originally called Fort McDowell soon afterwards Post office erected thereon January 3d 1848 By donation October 6th same year Mr Emmett Akeley became owner & road builder Nuevo Rancho de las Animas alias "Africa" extending thence south across Brazos River to Acoma Peak Range next named Los Alamos Range November 4th East side corner said range being donated by him December 10th same year Surveyed by Captain John Hennepin February 15 thchannel said range lying within limits hereinbefore mentioned having been surveyed by Capt Hennepin about two years before Spanish traders first came herewith Topeka Journal dated April 25 th1850 So it appears that without any real exaggeration or embellishment early pioneers were not too far off when they named this place "Farmington" after their home country which they had only recently discovered!
