Archaeologists have discovered tools, pottery, and even a sheep herder’s dog run as far back as 9600 BC. By AD 1000,Farmington had developed into a small trading post with settlements around it. In 1867, Don Carlos Maria de la Cueva granted ownership of much of present-day Farmington to his brother Miguel de la Cueva y Pacheco. This land included parts of today’s south side (Rio Grande Valley), east side (northwest corner), west side (southwest corner), and north-central part of today’s central area ( northwest corner). Farming began on this land soon after purchase as most settlers were Mexican Americans who had come west during the American Civil War seeking refuge from slavery. In 1870 alone, 10 farms were established within current day Farmington limits by individual farmers or groups thereof; these farms grew rapidly due to good soil conditions and access to irrigation systems brought about by Spanish colonialism some thirty miles away in Albuquerque which facilitated production on larger properties where water could be drawn from deep underground supplies rather than being shared equally among farmers across long ridges like those near Farmington HillsToday there are more than 200 businesses operating within boundaries defined by city streets while another dozen or so are registered with ZIP Codes 87501-87502
