Farmington, New Mexico was founded in 1847 by James W. McFarlane and his wife Nancy. They named the town after their farm, which they located about six miles east of the present day town. The first post office was established in Farmington in 1850. The first store was built on Main Street in 1851. In 1860, there were only four businesses in the town: a gristmill, a sawmill, a post office and a bakery. The population of Farmington increased rapidly from its small initial population of around 100 people to over 1,500 people by 1870 when it became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system. By 1880, the community had developed into a large farming center with several thousand acres of land yielding crops such as wheat, oats, potatoes and cotton. By 1910, the population had decreased to around 350 people due to declines in agricultural production and various other reasons including World War I and II that destroyed much of the towns infrastructure. However, during the late 20th century there has been an increase in activity within the community due to new developments such as online retailers and restaurants that have sprung up within walking distance of many homes in Farmingtontown Center mall
Farmington, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 3,091 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of McKinley County. Farmington is located on the Farmington-Chama River valley and is bordered by Socorro to the north and east, Ruidoso to the south, and Gallup to the west. The town was founded in 1875 as a result of an agreement between two entrepreneurs: James Wolk (a cattle drover) and George Hutton (a postmaster). The townsite had been surveyed by Captain John Tatum in 1868 but there were no buildings or inhabitants until after Wolk's arrival. In 1875, Wolk donated land for a market square and platted out what would become Farmington. By 1890, there were 8 businesses in town - five grocery stores, three grocery stores with agricultural products such as Feeds & More Feeds store (later known as Stop & Shop), hardware store, dry goods store, bank branch, and telephone company office - along with two churches: First Methodist Church which served farm families until 1915 and then parish church for French Catholics; Second Baptist Church which opened on Main Street in 1907. In 1925 Sleepy Hollow Elementary School replaced first grade through 8th grade in a building that functioned as both school and general store while also having classrooms used by local Little League teams from 1922-1927; before that it was just one room with benches outside where students took their breaks during warm weather drills provided by Pueblo Christian School District #2 during summer break 1927-1928; finally new Sleepy Hollow Elementary opened on July 1st 1928 with grades K-4 located inside just past Menard Avenue on side streets facing Broadway opposite Pueblo High School which served grades 5-8 until 1957 when all elementary schools merged into Pueblo Unified School District providing children from preKindergarten through 12th grade attend same campus). As early as 1876 another business sprouted up around what would become downtown: The Fidelity Hotel which became known locally for its excellent coffee service beginning circa 1896 when Isaac Stephenson started brewing beans fresh daily at his home using equipment he had acquired from his father who ran an early stage mill near Socorro Junction. By 1916 there were several groceries/restaurants open including McLaughlin’s Drug Store (now JB Hi-Fi), Fowler’s Cafe (now Getz’s Pizza), Bakker’s Hardware Store (now Meijer),post Office/Laundromat operated by Mrs Eileen Bedell since 1907 (renamed Midland Laundromat after she moved to town), Sappington Brewery operated by Red Roof Inn proprietors Tom & Sue Sappington since 1924 until they closed operations in 2009 followed shortly thereafter by Lone Star Brewing Company taproom reopened May 2014 following years of careful renovation project led by current proprietors Brenton Smithson & wife Julie Ann Smithson who purchased property from original owners Chuck & Janie Vallance back in 2005).
