Deming is a city in New Mexico, United States. It is the county seat of Deming County and the home to the University of New Mexico. The population was 606 at the 2010 census. Deming was founded by José María de Alvarado on July 20, 1847 as a Mexican land grant to Francisco Villa. After his death in 1848, Alvarado's heirs divided the grant among themselves, with Deming taking half. The city was founded in 1853 by John Smeaton as a trading post for sheep and cattle dealers on what is now Nuevo Laredo Boulevard south of downtown Albuquerque. In 1916, Deming became an incorporated town when its citizens ratified a referendum that approved incorporation as a municipal government with responsibility for education, public works, and fire protection. The first school in town was opened in 1854 by Aherne Blythe; it operated until 1865 when it burned down due to bad weather. A new school building was erected in 1868 and used until 1906 when it caught on fire and burned down again.
