According to statistics compiled by Gallup over time, Deming ranks third nationally forJob Openings per capita (behind Tucson Arizona and Riverside California). Deming, New Mexico is a small town in the middle of the Mexican state of Baja California. The name is derived from Spanish and means "place where people go to get water." The river that runs through Deming is the Rio Grande. The first settlers in Deming were Sephardic Jews who came overland from what is now Spain in 1847. They built a synagogue and some homes on the site of today's Deming High School. In 1959, the town was renamed for Minnie Peebles, an American actress and singer who had come tonamorrow to perform at the University of New Mexico. In 1967, Mayor William Peebles founded and became president of the local Chamber of Commerce. He was later elected as governor of Baja California and served two terms before retiring in 1982. At age 80, he was one of only three people ever to have held both offices in Baja California history. As governor, Peebles helped create new industries such as telecommunications and shipbuilding; he also reduced taxes and promoted tourism. He remains nationally remembered for his work promoting New Mexico's image as a business-friendly destination. Today, Deming has a population of about 2500 people, most concentrated around its downtown core where several restaurants, banks (including BankAmerica), post office/mail carrier service (US Mail), Department Store (J Farden & Sons), various types of businesses (notably arts and crafts stores) as well as four churches make up its cultural center - including one built specifically for religious services exclusively by Navajo Catholics on land donated by rancher José Antonio Villegas de la Fuente y Ulloa - making it one stop on a long journey into this diverse community with strong Hispanic roots dating back more than 160 years In recent years there has been growth associated with attractions like golf courses,, shopping centers,,theme parks,,and resorts which have drawn attention away from downtown while still preserving much character alive among many residents
The Deming area has a rich history dating back more than 125 years. The first Europeans to explore the area were Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and his companions in 1540. In 1825, Spanish military presence was established in the region after Mexico gained independence from Spain. The area became part of New Mexico Territory, which was created in 1864. In 1912, the territory was renamed to Deming County after Jepson Halleck Deming, an American industrialist who had a significant role in helping create the modern economy in New Mexico.
