High Capacity Kits (HCKs) are a new type of electric vehicle battery system that has the potential to increase the range and efficiency of electric vehicles. The Deming, New Mexico area was originally settled by the Pueblo of Acoma in the late 18th century. The Acoma people were expelled from their ancestral homeland in 1680 and relocated to what is now central New Mexico. The Pueblo of Santa Fe had been established on the same land by 1492, so the amalgamation of these two groups resulted in a new Puebloan culture that flourished until Spanish Conquest in 1540. When Manuel de la Hoz granted Rancho Seco to Juan Bautista Oñate in 1785, he also conveyed to Oñate 160 square miles (400 km2) of land which included what is now Deming and most of northwestern New Mexico. In 1827, Don José Maria Vargas partitioned Rancho Seco into three parts: part to Francisco Javier Martinez, part to Antonio Armijos and part to José Gaspar Dominguez. On July 3, 1830, Agustín de la Peña donated 666 acres (248 ha) northeast of Deming for a public school system. This donation helped spur development around this school site. In 1865, both cattle and sheep ranching began on much of this acreage; later it became known as the “Deming Valley” because so much grazing occurred there. In 1898 an assay office was established at Deming; within a decade all mining operations had ended due to high price tags associated with silver discoveries near Las Vegas along Interstate 10 east of Deming. However small-scale agriculture continued until World War II when local farmers produced large quantities of hay for local markets; thereafter many sectors dominated local economy including manufacturing and service-sector jobs in recent decades.
Deming is an unincorporated community in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. It is located on the Rio Grande about east of Albuquerque and west of Gallup. The Deming Post Office was established in 1907 and closed in 1973. Deming has a small town atmosphere with a population of about 140 people.
