In 1847 US forces invaded Santa Fe and drove out the Mexicans who had controlled that part of New Mexico for years; after months of fighting General Antonio López de Santa Anna established his garrison at Deming while he defended Tucson against attack from Confederate troops under General Braxton Bragg. Afterombsville began operations from Deming on August 1st 1863 during Ulysses S Grant’s Overland Campaign when Union general John Custer scouts reported knowledge about an upcoming Confederate force led by General Pecos which would cross the Chama River near Roswell Arizona Territory On July 5th 1863 At 6:00 AM Pecos attacked two Union cavalry detachments traveling north from Fort Sumter Texas under Lieutenant Colonel James Hance Pecos' main body reached Roswell on July 8th but did not attack until after dark when they discovered five Union cavalrymen hiding behind small hills southeast of town (the individuals later identified as Captain Samuel Tilden commanding Company I Sixth Cavalry Regiment) Pecos then ordered his unit to withdrawal across irrigation ditches northeast into Arizonan territory where they rendezvoused with other units south of PrescottArizona Territory
