Clovis, New Mexico is a small town in the eastern part of the state of New Mexico. It is located on the east side of the Rio Grande River, about 8 miles north of El Paso and about 20 miles south of Ciudad Juárez. The population was 1,771 at the 2010 census. The first inhabitants in this area were Native American people who lived in villages along the river banks. The first Europeans to come to Clovis were Spanish soldiers who explored this area in 1693. They discovered an abundant local source of uranium that led to their discovery of this place as a center for uranium mining. In 1881, Clovis became a city and was named after James Clovis, an executive with General Electric Company who had played a role in developing this area. In 1957, it became a suburb of El Paso when its residents left El Paso for more affordable housing near Interstate 10. Today, Clovis is home to many businesses including two universities and several shopping malls as well as dozens of small businesses and restaurants. There are also several golf courses located within driving distance of the town.

In 1767 José de Urrutia y Arce surveyed this area and made plans for a military post at Clovis, but nothing ever materialized because noone wanted to take on such a difficult assignment. In 1847, prospectors led by James Brounett discovered gold near Clovis while exploring for gold veins in what is now New Mexico. This led to great wealth being brought into Clovis over the next few years as men prospected for gold throughout central and southern New Mexico. On October 1, 1849, General Mariano Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living within five miles (8 km) of his army's encampment at Zacatecasbranded them " hostile" and began systematically rounding up and burning their villages indiscriminately. This massive forced migration across open country resulted in more than 5,000 Native American casualties including 2% of Santa Anna's force! By September 1850 most of these tribes had been driven out of central New Mexico westward into present-day Arizona Territory where they remain today as Navajo Nationspeople
