The first stores opened in this community on July 4th, 1802! Clovis, New Mexico is a small town in Mohave County, Arizona that has been inhabited since the early 19th century. The town was named for the Clovis culture of Native Americans. In 1869, the US government designated Clovis as part of the Fort Pickering Military Reservation. The reservation was deeded to the Republic of New Mexico in 1912. As a result of its location on a military reservation, Clovis experienced high levels of poverty and social unrest throughout its history. In 1916,Clovis elected its first municipal president, Wm. Bickham Waddell. After World War I ended, Clovis became an agricultural center due to its proximity to Apache Canyon and irrigated land from nearby Spanish Lake. However, during the 1930s and 1940s,Aramark Chemical Company operated inClovis until it relocated to Phoenix in 1951. In 1984,New Mexico UNESCO listedClovis as a World Heritage Site because of its archaeological sites and cultural significance: "The Town of Clovis is one of several ancient settlements located largely within present day Mohave County in southeastern Arizona near Tucson; these sites date back at least 12 thousand years." The town's unique architecture is one example of Old Western architecture which features adobe buildings withstood against repeated attacks by Apaches and other Indians.
