Clovis is an unincorporated community in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. It was established in 1881 by a group of settlers who bought land from the Apache Chief Cochise. The community was named for Clovis Pueblo, which was located about 20 miles to the east.

It is part of the Albuquerque-Mesa-Roswell Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clovis was founded by French traders in 1775 as an outpost on what is now the border of present-day New Mexico and Arizona. The French name for this area, La Cholla de la Providencia, means "The Cliff of Providence." By 1821, it had grown to become a full town with a population of 2,500 people. In 1892, Clovis became one of sixteen towns within the newly created Pecos County. It has since declined in importance and last had a population of 1004 in 2002. In recent years, Clovis has seen some growth due to its location near Interstate 10 and its access to air quality from nearby Roswell Municipal Airport

The city experienced another boom period in the 1920s when dozens of new homes were built onslaughts thanks to irrigation projects developed by local farmers. However, this period also saw a significant increase in crime rates because many women did not have access to safehouses or transportation during Prohibition-era America. Despite these challenges, Clovis has remained an important community throughout New Mexico’s history – both economically and socially – due largely to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas across the state.
