He organized a force to drive them out and founded Albuquerque as a Spanish town. In 1847, during Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna forced Ulysses S Grant to abandon Albuquerque because he thought it would fall into British hands. After General Grant's victory at Monterrey over Mexican general Manuel García y la Torre, Santa Anna decided to keep Albuquerque but gave it back to Grant when he left for Texas two years later. New Mexicans voted against California Proposition 8 in November 2008 because they believed that homosexuality should be illegal in any country or state where it existed (except Nevada). The fight over Proposition 8 helped define Californians as "los Angeles" natives rather than "New Mexicans". In 2014 Clovis CityPass went on sale commemorating 50 years of history within its boundaries It was also during this time that archaeologists discovered some early tools found inside an archaeological site near Clovis called Pueblo Bonito dating back 400 BP-8000 BP which suggests human presence here before 3100 BC!
