Clovis, New Mexico is a small town located in western New Mexico. It was founded by Captain John Clovis in 1869 and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1984. The population of Clovis was 7,780 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Clovis was captain John Clovis who explored the area in 1819. He named the spot after his friends, General Don Carlos Manuel de Rosales and colonel Francisco Xavier Ortega y Gasset, both of Spanish descent. A year later, on July 4th of that year, captain Clovis and his men discovered animal bones at the site which they believed to be those of an ancient series of Ancestral Puebloan people they had been told about. They traveled back home to tell their families about their find before continuing exploration on September 3rd with three other men including José Antonio Ortiz who also found Paleo-Indian artifacts near present day Albuquerque. It wasn't until 1830 that any real exploration into this area began as land grants were given out for ranching purposes by governor Fernando Garza Bejarano to various ranchers including José Armando García and Lorenzo de la Vega who bought some 130 miles (225 km) east of today's Albuquerque from Spain through private purchase agreements between 1829 and 1837 inclusive. In 1840, a group led by Kit Carson traversed this area searching for new lands west of the Rio Grande but only made it as far as Socorro before returning home empty handed due to lack of food supplies along the way. In 1846 Mexican War veteran José María Escobar Sánchez explored this area while working for Juan Bautista Flores Ibarra which included crossing over onto US soil via Cerro Gordo Pass - one of only two crossings over that route still open today without bridges or tunnels! On November 5th 1850 Agustín de Anza set forth on his famous California Gold Rush expedition under license from President Millard Fillmore seeking unspecified mineral rights within what are now Apache County and claims surrounding present day Clovis CDP but instead reached Santa Fe Springs where he left most all his equipment behind! It wasn't until 1893 when Captain George Waring visited here during much awaited survey work for coveted Rancho Luna land grant northwest along the Rio Grande which would eventually lead to development around modern day Albuquerque/Santa Fe Springs junction! That same year local farmer Héctor Correa erected a small adobe cabin near current day downtown Clovis on land belonging to Elijah Whitehead - another early pioneer here! Over time several businesses have opened up around downtown such as Jiffy Lube Cleaners & Dyers; First National Bank; The Rancho Luna Bakery; The Main Street Cafe & Grill; etc., making it one OF THE LARGEST BUSINESSES IN CLOVIS! During World War II many military personnel were stationed here such as generals George Patton and Dwight Eisenhower who used nearby Socorro Municipal Airport for aerial refueling operations during Operation Market Garden in 1944/45 respectively prior to their invasions across Europe! In 1958 oil production began right next door using an old windmill site off Route 66 just south of downtown Clovis providing jobs directly throughout southern New Mexico while also contributing significantly to economic development hereabouts! Today many businesses continue trading despite recent difficult times affecting many communities across America!!
