Clovis, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It was founded in 1847 by Don José de la Torre and his wife, María Margarita Sanz. The first store in Clovis was opened by J.B. Hennessey & Son, a grocery store and post office. In 1907, Clovis became the county seat of San Miguel County and Gertrude Mayo donated land to build the first courthouse in that county. The town's name comes from Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus' account of seeing what he thought was an Indian village called "Pueblo del Castillo" (Castle Town). When he asked the natives where it was, they replied: "clovi" meaning "town". In 1912, the first high school in Clovis graduated its first class of thirty-six students. In 1928, when New Mexico joined United States as a state, Clovis became part of Alamogordo County and still retains its autonomy as a municipality within that county until this day. In 1938, Clovis won an award from the American Home Economics Association for being one of America's top home-building towns because of its availability of good schools and excellent infrastructure such as water pipelines and streetlights that could be used for housing development projects on large parcels of land available for purchase at low prices by developers throughout the area. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, many Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II moved into southeastern New Mexico including Clovis which began to experience increased population growth due to their presence Addition also brought over workers from various other industries including mining and construction which continued until after 1960 when all new businesses closed or were relocated away from downtown areas due to regulations put into place during that time period known asThe “New Mexican Dilemma”
