Clovis is a city in New Mexico, United States. The Clovis culture was first mentioned by Spanish explorers in 1542 as the site of an ancient Puebloan village known as Cahokia. In 1756, the Spaniards discovered and named the area after Colonel John Clovis, who had explored the region in 1755. The name Clovis may have been derived from a Choctaw word meaning "the sharp one." In 1847, Lieutenant William H. Powell founded Fort Union at what is now Santa Fe, New Mexico and named it for General James Longstreet, Commander of Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican-American War. Powell was also responsible for discoverng Jenks Peak and San Miguel Island east of Albuquerque on July 10th, 1847 while exploring west-central New Mexico with his exploratory unit called Mounted Rifles under Captain Anson Mills. In 1912, Arapaho Chief Antonio Regalado made an agreement with George Armstrong Custer to sell him land east of Albuquerque for $5 million dollars which became known as cattle rancho deregalado or Rancho Custer. It is currently part of Apache National Monument located near Deming and Roswell
