Clovis, New Mexico is a town in Clovis County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque–Taos–Las Vegas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Clovis was Francisco Vásquez de Arza on July 10, 1540. He named it San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint. Spanish traders and travelers began visiting Clovis in the 16th century and by 1600 there were over 100 Spaniards living in the area. In 1681 French fur trader Pierre-Jacques Marquette explored and named the area Santa Fe after Saint Francis of Assisi. In 1827 José Vasquez Aguirre founded Rancho Las Palmas near present-day Clovis after purchasing 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land from Manuel Orozco y Gascón for $10 per acre ($1/km²). Of this rancho, 2/3 was sold to ranchers and farmers while 1/3 was reserved as a public grazing ground for cattle owners who paid an annual fee. In 1847 United States troops under General Zachary Taylor invaded New Mexico during the Mexican War when they discovered goldfields in that state; some reports say 5 men were killed trying to find them but no evidence exists to support this claim In 1916 Holster & Smith Manufacturing Company opened its doors in downtown Clovis with Samuel Colt as its founder and President John Atherton as Vice President. The company produced pistols until 1973 when it merged with Browning Arms Corporation forming Browning-Holsher Manufacturing Company which still produces handguns today under that name . According to legend, on November 25th 1912 two brothers - Hiram Bullock and James Weaver - set out from Pueblo del Rio (now Albuquerque) on horseback creating what became known as "The Cowboy Revolution." Weaver's goal was to purchase 8 miles(12 km) of switchbacks leading upriver to a mineral deposit called White Sands where he would prospect for silver ore. They reached their objective within three days but due to bad weather they had to return home before dark on December 4th 1912 On February 14th 1914 cowboy Edmond Custer died during combat with the US Cavalry at Washita Hills near Fort Worth Texas while serving with the 7th Cavalry Regiment commanded by Colonel George Armstrong Custer III American Horse Artillery Pioneer Trophies posthumously awarded him are now awarded annually by The Custer Museum located athd Washita Hills Oklahoma
