Clovis is a small, unincorporated community located in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Many of the artifacts from this culture have been discovered at Clovis National Monument. As early as 10,000 years ago, people lived in what is now Doña Ana County. At that time, there were several villages along the Rio Grande River. One of these villages was called Clovis because its inhabitants had traded with other tribes in central Mexico. There are reports that some people living near Clovis may have seen a human foot print while traveling down the riverbed. This led to speculation that someone from this village might have first noticed humans on the continent. In 841 AD, Spanish traders arrived in southern New Mexico and began trading with native nations. One of these traders was Hernando de Soto, who explored what is now Texas and Sayre Valley area during his tripnorthward in 1827-28. While exploring this region, he came across a group of Indians who he thought were primitive or barbarous because they did not wear clothes or use any tools. He named these natives after his old home village—Calvados—in France (now Carcassonne). de Soto also noted that these Indians appeared to be related to those living near present-day Clovis NM., where he stopped for supplies on his way northward again in 1829-30 [1]. It is possible that Hernando De Soto may have seen evidence of ancient Native American settlements hereabouts before reaching present day Doña Ana County by chance or design! The first Europeans to explore what is today New Mexico arrived via sailing vessel on November 14th 1624 by Captain Don Fernando San Miguel[2]. They were looking for new land to exploit for Spain which lay beyond Cuba and Hispaniola (present day Haiti). After landfalling on Isla Diomedes about 45 miles east coast of Baja California Sur they founded La Venta[3], naming it after their patron saint Diego Diaz de la Vega y Menendez (1493? – 1558?). In 1625 Trajan wrote: “This I verify by taking possession” referring back to Captains San Miguel’s discovery but no precise location could be determined [4]; La Venta appears likely founded around September 1st 1625 when Juan Rodríguez Caballero sighted an Indian canoe overturned at Point Dos Pinos about 12 miles due south;[5] probable sites included Isla Tlapalapa near Santa Fe City; Cabrillo’s landing site Off Point Loma about 7 miles NWSW Loboski Beach straddling present day Socorro & Truchonado Counties; current Mazatlan Peninsula between Socorro Bay & Coahuila River approximately 40 nm WNW Los Alamitos Bay although some dispute its authenticity [6]; Pedro Fages touched bottom off Dec 17th 1700 just N/E Coyote Key light indicating presenceof pre Hispanic Coast Miwok Tribe however tribe has not confirmed presence since then [7],[8].
