Clovis is a small town located in the County of Clovis, New Mexico, United States. The town seat is the village of Clovis. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. The first gun ever made in Clovis was an 1836 revolver by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Company. It was not very successful and only produced around 100 weapons throughout its lifetime. In 1876, Wesson Firearms Manufacturing Co., Incorporated began manufacturing revolvers in Clovis under the name "Wesson Model 8". This factory produced over 1 million revolvers from 1876 to 1984. In 1934, FN Herstal & Sohn began producing pistols and rifles in Clovis under the name "FN Swiss Arms Factory", which continued until 1996 when it merged with Steyr-Mannlicher AG to form Austrian Weapons Holding SA (AWH). AWH continued to produce firearms for export until 2001 when it became part of Sporting Arms & Ammunition Corporation (SAAC) as part of a larger sale that included Browning handguns and other firearms assets to Browning Firearms Corporation (BFC). Clovis is a small town in northern New Mexico, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pecos County, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area. Clovis was founded by Spanish settlers in 1847. The name means "hidden mountain" in the Apache language. The Clovis culture is one of the oldest known cultures in North America and has been identified at two sites in southeastern Oklahoma and western New Mexico. The artifacts found at these sites are thought to be from this period of American history. One site, called Mockingbird Hills, has evidence that human presence had been present in east-central Texas for as long as 10,000 years before any other humans were found there. Clovis appears to have emerged from behind the eastern edge of what are now central Kansas and Nebraska about 12,700 years ago according to radiocarbon dating techniques used on pottery shards discovered there during the 1970s excavations led by Bruce Hannemann of Kansas State University and his team. A related culture called Jemez may have arrived much earlier than either Clovis or Jemez; however their connection with each other remains unknown today. The first European visitors to what is now New Mexican soil were members of a group led by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado on July 30, 1539 when they sighted six figures walking across an open field near Presente La Union near Albuquerque – later dubbed Coronado's Rancho San Miguel de Allende - after which Vasquez named all of central New Mexico after him including Querétaro (present day Chihuahua), Morelos (present day México City), and Socorro (present day Socorro County). After exploring this area extensively they reported back to Spain on October 7, 1540 with extensive land holdings that included parts of modern-day Piñon Valley and Santa Fe County NM as well as claims for parts of Arizona Territory including Tucson AZ and Prescott AZ Today these lands would form part of present-day Arizona Territory along with many more square miles still unclaimed today

In 1912, Native American leader Gerónimo Reyes signed a treaty giving land east of Pecos River to New Mexico Territory as part of Treaty 2 following his victory over Spanish forces at San Juan Hill. The town's name change took place on October 1st that year when it became known as Grantsville after Ulysses S Grant, President Woodrow Wilson's secretary of war and one of the signers of Treaty 2.
