Clovis, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of Colorado. It is located on the San Miguel River and was founded by Spanish settlers in 1847. The community became known for its ammunition production, which continued until the early 21st century. In 1903, Clovis joined the newly formed United States as a result of the Mexican-American War. At that time, it was one of only a few communities in what would become the Southwest United States to do so. The ammunition industry in Clovis declined following World War II but has since been revived thanks to new technology and improvements to manufacturing processes. Clovis is a small town in New Mexico, located about 25 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The Clovis culture is thought to have arisen around 10,000 years ago and was associated with the Hopi people. It is one of only a few known cultures where stone tools were used to create projectile points. Some archaeologists believe that the Clovis culture may have been named for an early European explorer, Clovis of Normandy, who visited New Mexico in 1469. The first white man to visit New Mexico was José Jiménez de la Cruz, who explored the state in 1803-04. In 1821 MexicanCaptain Antonio López de Santa Anna founded Taos by establishing a post on the San Pedro River. A year later he yanked out all but 4 miles (6 km) of the Rio Grande and built Fort Craig at what is now White Sands Missile Range. Santa Anna's successors abandoned Taos after Apache warriors destroyed his fort in 1829; however, Spanish traders continued to explore and trade with the region until they were driven out by Utes during the gold Rush of 1850-60. In 1861 Father Francisco Javier Pardo established Mission San Miguel Arcángel near present day Albuquerque; it was renamed missions Santa Fe in 1865 and Churubusco in 1881 following French donations of land for religious purposes. The Albuquerque mission complex spanned over 175 acres (70 hectares) and had three churches: La Compañía de Jesús (1868), Nuestra Señora del Carmen (1876), and Santiago nuevo (1892). Rancho Nueva Esperanza was granted by Governor James Wickersham to Manuel Ortiz on November 12, 1907; it became part of the La Cueva District within Roswell County on February 9, 1912 when its lands were organized as part of Los Alamos National Monument east of Interstate 805. Clovis has always been an important cultural center for this region; numerous government officials including Governors Austin Peay and George Bird Griggs traveled here for meetings during their careers including those held at Isleta Peak beginning on December 1st 1860 which led to passage of legislation creating El Cuchillo National Monument northwest of Albuquerque on October 13th 1862 According to researcher Dick Coombs "It would seem that any politician or businessperson going through this area felt obligated either [to] do some archaeology or observe Native American life." This began what would be called "the Archaeological Boom" during which more archaeological sites were discovered throughout southern NM Many think that this boom represented not simply an increase in research but also public interest due largely to popular books such as Marshall Sahlins' Ancient America published between 1960-1965 which helped leadto increased funding
Clovis was one of the first towns in New Mexico. It was founded by a man named Clovis about 8,000 years ago. The town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1857, but it was rebuilt and renamed Clovis after the event.
