During World War II, Carlsbad played an important role as a munitions plant; during the war, its residents produced more than five million rounds of ammunition for American troops
Carlsbad was founded in 1849 by the Swedes as a small trading post on the bank of an unnavigable stream. The name originated from the Spanish word "carrujero," meaning "trading car." The first year that Carlsbad had a census, it population was only 20. In 1850, the post became a town and in 1861, it became a county seat. It experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its location at the junction of several wagon roads and its importance as an agricultural center.
