The town's name comes from two locations: "Carlsbad" (meaning "Carson Valley") and "Badaloupe" (meaning "Island of Bamboo"). They were led by Danish immigrant Carl Munch who had built a cabin near present-day Carlsbad while working as an auctioneer. The first post office called Banfield was established in 1885, but it later changed its name to Carlsbad because no one wanted to move there after hearing about Banff National Park in Alberta Canada. In 1886, local Hardware Merchant John Hessler opened what became known as the World's First dry goods store at 6th Street and South Main Street - now part of US 1 near downtown Carlsbad. In 1889 Hessler bought 16 acres (6 ha) north of town along US 1 for $1 million dollars which he donated to the town government as an agricultural area with access to irrigation water supplies from nearby mountainside reservations game preserves and other resources that could be used for crop production rather than being used solely as grazing land or housing sites for farmers and their families. This donation transformed Carlsbasd into what it is today - one of the most vibrant towns withinBernalillo County with over 9 hundred residents including many recent Hispanic/Latino immigrants since 1990 when community demographics shifted dramatically due largely to large waves of immigration following the passage of Proposition 187 during the Clinton administration
