Carlsbad is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. It is located on an east-west trending valley and covers an area of just under 1 square mile (3 km²). The population was 3,533 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Carlsbad were Spanish explorers in 1540, who named it San Andrés de Carlsbad. The name may be derived from the Nahuatl word "calpulli" meaning "a kind of bread". In 1821, when Carlsbad became part of Mexican territory, it was renamed Ciudad Victoria. In 1886, a group of businessmen and farmers led by Prentice Budd founded the Budd Company which manufactured agricultural implements. They started out making wagons but soon developed other products such as tractors and irrigation systems. The company prospered until World War II when production ceased because of wartime rationing. After the war, the company resumed its previous activities but went bankrupt in 1960. Today there are few remnants of Budd Company activity apart from a few small businesses that continue to produce agricultural equipment and accessories such as hoes and shovels made from metal or plastic rather than wood or bone

One significant event that occurred in Carlsbad during this time was the 1916 Flores–McDowell Expedition which explored parts of Central America north of Guatemala City before returning to Mexico City via Veracruz and arriving at Oaxaca on July 14th; one day after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's attempt unsuccessfully to conquer that same region two years earlier (1894). The expedition also included American explorer Woodrow Wilson who had come down from Washington D.C.; however no evidence currently exists indicating whether or not he actually saw anything interesting while in Carlsad
