In 1876, Carlsbad was founded by Augustus Henry Payne and his wife, Emma. The town had a population of only 20 people when it was platted in 1877. By the early 1920s, Carlsbad had a population of over 100 people and rapidly became an important agricultural center due to its rich soil and abundance of water resources. The town's growth led to the development of several businesses: a post office, bank, grocery store, livery stable, car dealership and many other commercial enterprises. In 1949, Carlsbad became an incorporated city with a population of over 200 people. At this time, Carlsbads significant economic importance made it one of the most affluent communities in New Mexico. Today, Carlsbad is known for its beautiful architecture and vibrant cultural scene.

The company became a leading toolmaker in America and exported its products to many countries. In 1932, the company merged with DeWitt-Haley Inc. to form Carlsbad-DeWitt Tool Works. The company continued producing tools until it was acquired by JB Hunt in 1993.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Carlsbad has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,890 people, 2,912 households, and 2,569 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,549 people per square mile (553/km²). There were 3,724 housing units at an average density of 653 per square mile (237/km²).
