Gun swivels, also known as cocking handle grip safeties, have been in use for firearms since the early 1800s. The first gun that featured a swivel base was the French Army musket, which required a separate cocking handle to be used with one hand. In 1847, Benjamin Butler of Philadelphia patented an improved design that allowed guns to be fired without having to remove the cocking handle. This gave rise to the muzzle-loading rifle and pistols. Cocking handles were not universal on all firearms however, and some were designed without them. The trigger guard on many rifles was equipped with a safety catch that enabled the firearm to be fired only when it was fully cocked by using either one hand or by pulling the trigger with both hands. For this reason, most historically significant handguns featuring cocking handles were single-shot shotguns or lever-action rifles originally designed as sporting weapons rather than general purpose service firearms. After World War II, handgun manufacturing moved towards centerfire calibers such as .45 ACP and 9mm Parabellum while revolver manufacture reverted back to single-shot models. Gunswivels became popular in this era because they allowed shooters who preferred one handed operation with their firearms to fire them while wearing gloves or other protective gear (such as a face mask). However, due to their propensity for breaking from time-to-time during storage or transportation, gunswivels are now generally only used for antique Firearms collectors or vintage militaria display purposes.

Carlsbad, New Mexico is a town located in south-central New Mexico. The population was 9,711 as of the 2010 census. The town is named after Admiral George Carlsbad and it was established as a post office on November 1, 1876. It became an incorporated town on December 12, 1912.
Swivels were invented in 1851 by a French-American gunsmith, Nicolas-Jacques Conte. At the time, pistols were generally muzzleloading firearms that rotated their barrels to fire multiple shots per minute. To reload quickly and efficiently, many soldiers and civilians used drum or belt systems to hold rounds tightly together before firing them off at a rapid rate. However, these systems were difficult and time consuming to use effectively when moving around on battlefields. As muzzleloading firearms became less common, swivels began to be developed as a faster and easier way of reloading pistols. The first known example of an American-made firearm with a swivel system was the Winchester Repeating Arms Company's Model 1873 carbine. This rifle had an attached barrel that could be turned for loading and ejecting rounds from the magazine using a rotating knob. The first true mass production firearm using this system was the Colt Springfield Armory's Model 1861 repeating Rifle. This rifle featured two boredrellike barrels which could be locked together using screws at one end while still being able to rotate for loading and firing operations. The other end of each barrel housed an octagonal percussion cap magazine that held ten rounds per clip (i.e., five rounds per shot). Although this system was successful in its initial release, it ultimately proved too dangerous to widespread adoption due to its cumbersome design and high recoil caused by the screw lock mechanism. Nevertheless, it would continue to remain popular in select military circles until finally being phased out in favor of more modern methods such as bolt action rifles in the late 19th century onwards

The railroad arrived in Carlsbad in 1875 and increased economic growth as goods and passengers moved between Pecos County and Albuquerque. In 1906 the town became a city, but its growth slowed during World War II because of military activity around Carlsbad and Santa Fe. By 1960 Carlsbad's population had decreased to 5,500 residents; however, it has since grown again with new development areas such as North Mesa and South Mesa. Today Carlsbad is a bedroom community for the larger towns around it; however, its history remains significant thanks to its rich cultural heritage which includes musichall performances from the 1920s through present day; Tourist attractions including museums representing Native American art; active free-roaming dog (poodle) populations that have helped contribute to naturalized English names for many streets within the limits of town; As well as several golf courses located within easy driving distance of downtown Carlsbad
