William Hennepin built a mill in 1909 and began to produce flour for local consumption and export. In 1916, the US Post Office moved from El Paso to Carlsbad and the community became known as "the old post office." The first school in Carlsbad opened in 1903 and it was eventually replaced by a high school which opened in 1929. In 1937, Carlsbad became an incorporated municipality with its own government and court system. By 1990, the total population had reached 2,869 people making it one of the most diverse communities in San Miguel County. Today, Carlsbad continues to be an important center for trade and commerce with a variety of businesses including restaurants, stores, schools, churches and hospitals all situated within walking distance of each other. The Carlsbad Mall is also home to several popular retail chains such as Macy's & Sears as well as two large banks - HSBC Bank & Wells Fargo - both of which have branches located inside the mall itself!

It is one of the most-populous towns in New Mexico and has been identified as a "speed bump" for Interstate 10. The town was founded by Scotsman John McLaren in 1879 after he bought 4,000 acres of land north of Albuquerque. The first post office was established in 1881. In 1907, Carlsbad organized its first school district and began to build a dam on the Rio Grande to store water for irrigation purposes. The community's name derives from John McLaren's home near the current site of Carlsbad High School - "Carlsbad" means "place where cows pastured." The original buildings that still stand in Carlsbad date back to the 1870s when it became evident that this area would become important due to its location on I-10 and access to irrigate cotton fields. By 1912, there were over 50 businesses in Carlsabad with a total payroll of $711,000! Today, many businesses have closed or been taken over by larger counterparts within less than two decades; however, there are still some notable examples such as Cabela's Outdoor Store which is still open today despite having only been open since 1992! One significant event that took place during these years was World War II when many residents enlisted into the military or worked commercially off-site at nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory (later called Los Alamos County). This led to increased economic development as local businesses started selling items related to wartime production like munitions and firearms. After the war ended, many residents returned home and helped rebuild their communities; however, some remain active within their communities today including running local schools and organizations like Carlsbad Amateur Radio Club (CARC).
