Gun lights first appeared in Carlsbad, New Mexico in the early 1800s. At that time, the area was a hunting ground for the Apache and other Native American tribes. As part of their hunt, the Apache would light up their path with fire from their rifles to guide their prey. This method of signalling was known as "gunlights." The first gun lights were made from small brass or copper objects that were hung from a clothesline or Stringer's No. 2 line. The object would be used as a light source to guide game back to camp during the day. Eventually, these gunsights became more sophisticated and could be controlled by means of an electric motor and/or a hand crank. Gun lights continued to be used until about 1910 when they were replaced by headlights on automobiles.

He produced some crude oil and sold it to other entrepreneurs for $3 per barrel. In 1881, he developed an even more powerful drill called the "Carrillo-2" that could produce 10 barrels per minute. In 1892, he formed the company Western Oil and Refining Company with fellow Norwegian immigrants Jens Chrissen and Ole Olsen to sell his drilling technology and production services. By 1902, Western Oil and Refining Company had become one of the largest companies in Carlsbad County. Carlson died in 1923 at age 86 years old; his son John A. Carlson Jr., who succeeded him as CEO of Western Oil and Refining Company, served until 1970.
