In 1941–1942 during World War II, Carlsbad played host to America's largest open air military drill using up to 160 detachments from all over the United States; it also served as a training ground for troops occupying northern New Mexico after Japanese forces had taken control of that territory following their surrender at Bataan Peninsula on April 8th 1945. On July 11th 1946 President Harry S Truman issued Executive Order 9066 which closed down AEP's Auschwitz plant located near Carlsbad because "the plant was engaged in war crimes." This event has been often cited as one of the most iconic moments in American history because it demonstrated U.S.'s resolve to bring peace to Asia while also demonstrating U.S.'s commitment to anti-Communism efforts globally although AEP continued operations until 1990 when they retired all their equipment except for some rare ceremonial use until 2006 when they donated it all to Dumbarton Oaks University where it remains today as part of their Rosenwald Museum & Library collection
