They named the area after Areta, a saint who lived in Extremadura, southern Spain at that time. In 1892, Artesia became a city under Mexican rule when it was divided into five districts. At that time it had a total population of just 401 people living in 178 households. During its early years as a city, Artesia did not have any schools or public libraries - all citizens learned to read and write directly from their families or friends. What we now call “the golden age” of Artesia began with the opening of the first public library on October 15, 1898 by Mrs Ethel Loyall with an initial collection of $2 worth of books! In 1907, Artesia received its charter from New Mexico Governor Otero which made it one of the state's twelve townships (later counties) within New Mexico's territory! The charter also authorized for Artsia to become an official Ute Indian reservation! On July 1st 1912 residents approved ordinances creating water supply and electric lighting for their city! On November 6th 1916 voters passed proposition 8 authorizing annexation by Albuquerque which gave us our current name – “New Mexico City”! Finally on January 3rd 1929 Mayor Harry Fenton proposed incorporation as an incorporated town within Albuquerque but due to lack support he withdrew his proposal after only 10 votes! Today we continue to serve both cities as two separate municipalities though we maintain close ties with each other through events like Festival de la Vida local & Balloon Fiesta each year

In the 1840s, Artesia was a thriving town in New Mexico. It was located on the east side of the Santa Fe River, about 25 miles north of Albuquerque. The town had a population of around 350 people when it was destroyed by a fire in 1851. Artesia was founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1839. The town was named after Aethelreda, an angel who had been killed during a religious crusade against paganism. The first settler to arrive in Artesia were José and María de la Cruz, who arrived on July 14th, 1840. They built a small cabin and started farming local land. The first post office in Artesia was established on October 2nd, 1840. In 1848, the railroad came through Artesia and made it easier for goods to be transported between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. This also helped bring new settlers to the area. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Artesia. The economy of Artesia changed when gold began to be discovered near modern-day Albuquerque in 1847.Goldmining became more common in New Mexico as miners looked for ways to make money from their finds rather than selling them back home to families that already had property there. As more mines were opened up throughout New Mexico, so too did business opportunities for businesses such as stores and restaurants that sprang up around the townsfolk during this time period (Norman & Martinez 1998). As gold became more available and valuable throughout New Mexico, people turned their attention towards making money from it instead of trying to find it all alone or investing into expensiveaboriginal land (Fischer 1988; Hidalgo 1980). This change led to an increase in business activity which led to increased production at local companies like Peralta Brothers Mines (Hidalgo 1980). This also lead to an increase demand for goods brought into the area by travelers looking for minerals or other resources (Fischer 1988). With these changes came an increasein social stability within Artesianos because they now had accesseto these new sources of income (Norman & Martinez 1998).
The first European to explore Artesia was Captain Juan de Grijalva in 1540. The area around Artesia, New Mexico was once home to the Apache and Pueblo peoples. The Pueblo people were the most numerous of the Native American groups in the area. In 1827, Spanish troops invaded New Mexico and discovered a large gold mine at Comanchería. This discovery led to an influx of Spaniards into the region, which caused tension with the local Indian population. In 1830, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the massacre of 600 Apache Indians near present-day Alamosa by Order of Colonel James Wilkinson. This event is now celebrated as Saint Anthony's Day in Artesia.
